Army to stop using photos on officers' records, citing racial bias concerns

The U.S. Army is dropping the use of photographs in officers' personnel files when being considered for promotions and other matters in an effort to stamp out unconscious bias, officials announced Thursday.

The move is part of Project Inclusion, an initiative designed to address possible racial disparities within America's largest fighting force. The elimination of photos for Army officer selection boards will begin in August, officials said.

Promotion board processes for warrant officers and noncommissioned officers are also being reviewed, the Army said in a statement.

Gonna have to stop using first and second names, too. Donte Jamal elicits a certain assumption.

This crap is still going on, 3 1/2 years after Obama left office?

I wonder if there will also be an issue with fake credentials, or if its just going to be limited to the files used in promotional reviews.

LOL.

When I was in the Air Force my professional picture was without a mustache.

When up for selection for a special assignment or a Residency (as an MD),
we knew the the first thing they did was separate into 2 piles. Mustache and no mustache. They give out assignments to the no mustache group. then went back to the mustache group and selected what was left.

Also unless the military is going to use numbers instead of names they are still going to have a problem with D’Angelos and Tredarius and Muhammed etcet.

I hardly think they will succeed in making an officer's race some kind of secret.

And if they do, what happens if they suddenly realize that minority officers are getting promoted at a lower rate than white officers? People will be outraged. What's the defense? "I had no idea" or "I didn't know what he looked like" or "I judged the content of his character not the color of his skin"? None of those answers will be acceptable.

Also what happens when they totally blind the selection process and Blacks and orhwe minorities suddenly get less promotions because of merit?

Will it also stop the monthly report on the breakdown by race of every rank?

When I was at Fort. Gordon, Georgia my section leader, Plt Sgt, 1SG, CO, BN CSM, BN CO and Regt CO were all black. Gee that just screams diversity. Years later when in Hawaii I was on orders to Ft. Hood but needed to update paperwork or I’d be sent back to Gordon. My wife said that if I went to Hood I’d be deployed. I updated the paperwork in six hours, emailed and faxed it to DA and called to confirm they got it. No way in hell was I going back to Gordon. Iraq was much better.

Next thing they’ll do is cover up PT scores. Can’t have the athletically-challenged discriminated against!

Same thing, probably, as when they did this with college applications. They banned photographs, and minority admissions went down.

So, they reversed it, required photos, and ordered colleges to discriminate in favor of minorities.

That was my first thought, great new for the fat bodies. I am old and over weight, but as a young Marine I was a PT stud. I battled weight as an over the hill Chief, but alway stayed in standards. Even on Marine bases I am now seeing over weight Marines and Sailors. I saw a Marine Colonel who was shorter and heavier then me and I easily have 15 years on him. How does that happen unless he is near retirement and does not care. At the Army base I noticed a large number of big (not pregnant) female Soldiers. Surprisingly, the Navy actually seems to be stricter in that regard, but I heard they relaxed standards for females again. Imagine rushing to your stations during a general emergency and having a Staci Abrams in front of you trying to get through the hatches!

The article says there will still be a line on the form that you have to check your race.Doesn’t having a checkmark to denote race on the form defeat the purpose of not allowing a photo of the candidate on the form so the reviewer will not consider race. Why the kabuki dance when in the end we all know that affirmative action will dictate that minorities and women will be given a preference in promotion as it has always been in the military promotion system since the seventies.

They probably should stop using any identification. I think the chiefs board in the navy do that. Only pick quality chiefs.

Story: I spent several years in the reserves, and my CO told a story of when they were reviewing a reserve officer's package for promotion. The only thing he did since getting off active duty, was manage a McDonald's - that was it.

So when they were discussing his package, they were groping for a reason to promote this candidate, when someone blurted out, "He deserves a break today !"

The room broke out in laughter, and he got promoted ...

Interesting - in past years often less than qualified officers were promoted simply because they were black in an effort to increase the number of blacks in the officer ranks. And that’s a fact!!! We also did that in the industrial world because it looks good on the reports.
