AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) The FOX31 Problem Solvers have been working to bring you the most thorough investigations related to the Elijah McClain case since August 2019, when McClain was confronted by three police officers, injected with ketamine and later died.
McClain, 23, was wearing a mask when someone called 911 to report that he seemed suspicious. McClain often wore the mask while jogging, according to his family and friends. He was not committing a crime and was unarmed when police approached him.
FOX31 was the first to track down the store clerk and the surveillance video from the store were McClain was purchasing refreshments prior to being confronted by police. In the video, he does a peaceful bow to the man behind him in line. His sister described it as a gratitude bow. His motto was with gratitude she said.
The body camera footage wasnt released publicly until months after McClains death. We spent hours sorting through every minute of the footage to sync various angles and bring you the most complete picture of McClains final conscious moments.
It took more than two months for the coroners office to publicly announce that it could not determine a cause and manner of death with certainty. The police officers used a carotid hold on McClain, and that could not be ruled out as a contributing factor. The paramedics administered ketamine to sedate McClain, and an adverse reaction to the drug could not be ruled out.
The FOX31 Problem Solvers investigative team was the first to exclusively obtain and reveal internal video interviews with the Aurora police officers who were involved in the altercation. You can watch how they described their own actions.
We also obtained documents showing at least one paramedic on the scene felt McClain received too much ketamine.

Won’t matter. People will find a way to justify killing him.
The cops administered too much ketamine?
That caught my attention too. I’ve never heard of the police doing that before.
Possibly the paramedics did.
“The paramedics administered ketamine to sedate McClain, and an adverse reaction to the drug could not be ruled out.”
from article.
Same stuff given to Tony Timpa and others. Just learned that recently myself...
Wow. So the cops put him in a carotid restraint (whoever thought cops having that in their arsenal was a good idea needs to be shot) and then gave him too much of a date-rape drug (see previous parenthetical). Heartbreaking is the right word. This is just wrong.
Never heard of that either.
I have to comment though....so many people put down female cops because they are not strong enough to take down a guy....well there were at least 7 men there to take down this one guy....it took 7 of them....
people should not die just because they're not being good little boy scouts yes sir/no sir......
I didn’t see anything suggesting excessive force considering he was resisting and fighting against the officers pretty much from the get go. Further repeatedly telling him to stop....he didn’t.
My father told me ‘never attempt to flee or fight the police. They will win whatever they have to do.
He also recommended to note who or what was going on around me and don't speak to strangers and don't act like a wise guy. People. as he said, are strange and you never know what will trigger someone. This man's disabilities also removed normal common sense and situational awareness (not paranoid behavior).
7 cops were there but all 7 didn’t take him down.
Do you think that is really ALL it was ? Why did this normally 'polite' man suddenly have the strength to overpower 6-7 armed and fully grown men ?
In the initial footage, I did not see any reasonable suspicion for a stop.
Neither do I. Someone called 911 and said a man wearing a ski mask was behaving oddly. That was it. No crime was committed.
None of that leads you to inject someone with 500mg of ketamine, which is what they did. If he was drunk or intoxicated at all, it would be instantly lethal.
Aurora has been dirty for a long time, and that is just wrong.
