Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Thursday that the state will pause any further reopening as the state continues to report record increases in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations.
Businesses that were permitted to open under the previous phases can continue to operate at the designated occupancy outlined by the Texas Department of State Health Services, according to statement from Abbotts office.
The last thing we want to do as a state is go backwards and close down businesses. This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business, Abbott said in the release.
Many businesses in Texas were granted permission to reopen in May. Restaurants, gyms, retailers, professional sports, bars and other venues were allowed to reopen with reduced capacity. It wasnt immediately made clear which businesses wouldnt be allowed to be reopen moving forward or when the order would be lifted.
Earlier on Thursday, Abbott ordered all licensed hospitals in the hard-hit Bexar, Dallas, Harris and Travis counties to postpone elective procedures in order to protect hospital capacity for Covid-19 patients. Those counties include the states largest cities Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin. There are currently 4,389 Covid-19 patients hospitalized statewide in Texas, up from 2,793 a week ago, according to the states health department.
These four counties have experienced significant increases in people being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and todays action is a precautionary step to help ensure that the hospitals in these counties continue to have ample supply of available beds to treat COVID-19 patients, Abbott said in his executive order.
Texas is one of the states in the American West and South experiencing a recent surge in Covid-19 cases. On Wednesday, the state reported more than 5,500 additional Covid-19 cases.

Fluckers can’t even write a headline without prevaricating. The elective surgery thing is only in the four biggest counties right now. Doctors in these counties say there are still plenty of beds.
This is such BS!! They are going to lock us down again!!! THERE IS NO FREAKIN REASON but to bring down a man!!! I’m very disappointed in Abbott...EXTREMELY!! His job is on the line...from a ballsy guy to a spineless @$$!! Be ready for the MAIL IN BALLOTS in Tx!!! They are going to steal it!! MARK IT!
And that is what this is all about.
Lock it all down as the excuse for mail-in voting.
I cant believe Abbott fell for the big lie .
Unreal .
What the heck is this guy doing .
The left wing lying propaganda outlets should all be arrested .
Coming across the border?
Gov Abbott is a fool and a traitor!
Yes, where is the GOP controlled legislative to stop this moron?
The Houston funeral fiasco and featured riot episode were what, a couple of weeks ago? Maybe all those people not distancing nor wearing masks spread the WuFlu again!
He sounded like my rino Governor in New Hampshire when I saw him on Martha mcculum the other night. Disappointed in him . He seemed like a solid conservative before. His LT Governor was the one who stood up for the woman with the hair salon .
What is “it”? Is “it” the sniffles?
I was referring to a positive test for Covid-19.
LOL! For those under 60 testing positive for COVID for is a joke 99.9% of the time. Does this not mean anything to you? Are you a fearper? I THINK SO.
Yes, I am aware that the fatality rate is low.
Our friend's daughter got tested because her best friend is positive and very sick. Our friend's daughter's results indicate that she does not have it, but does have the antibodies (which is a good thing).
Other friends have told us that some of the people they know who got it are sick, while some never show any symptoms at all and feel fine.
That’s all Abbott needed to do....was tell the truth...that this ‘spike’ is the result of the mass gatherings of the peaceful rioters.
But, no....he hits the pause button, on TX.
In my opinion that is exactly right. We had protests downtown here, and then after it settle down there's a spike. And the local media is saying, "Gosh, we can't figure out why this happened...".
What is the ratio of those that got sick, to those that had little or no symptoms?
I am in NC....where our resident dictator has mandated everyone wear a mask. I am angry about that.
But today, I heard from a friend whose wife had to be hospitalized locally. He said there is a waiting list for a hospital bed “a mile long” so she is having to stay in the emergency department.
So hospitalizations are up. That’s not a good sign.
