Record-breaking Coronavirus hospitalizations 'overwhelm' Arizona, Texas as governors struggle to contain surge

Coronavirus hospitalizations in Arizona and Texas have hit record numbers as cases continue to surge in states in the South and the West, overwhelming medical professionals.

Arizona reported a record high of 3,591 new cases Tuesday, with nearly 60,000 known cases in the state overall. The swell in cases came as President Donald Trump held a rally at a Phoenix megachurch Tuesday.

There was a surge in the number of inpatient beds occupied by positive or suspected COVID-19 patients, with 2,136 beds occupied, compared to 1,992 Sunday, according to data from the state's Department of Health Services.

Meanwhile, 84 percent of intensive care unit beds were in use at Arizona hospitals and 83 percent of inpatient beds were in use as of Monday, according to the data.

"Each day I've been going into work over the last month is worse, and what I mean by worse is ... just overwhelmed with COVID patients," said Dr. Frank LoVecchio, who works in several Arizona hospitals in emergency medicine and public health.

LoVecchio, who works with the Banner Health, the Valleywise Health and the Abrazo Health systems in Arizona, said hospitals have been very good about getting everyone personal protective equipment, or PPE, and offering counseling help lines for providers. Hospitals had been doing the best they could, he said, converting space to handle the increase in COVID patients.

But with the rush, medical staff were becoming exhausted.

"They complain of exhaustion — physical, mental — many times they're dehydrated and tired," he said. "I think back to like seven, eight months ago, one of our big concerns was nurses, doctors stay hydrated, make sure you get snacks, sleep well, take your breaks. That stuff is out the window."

Correct. How many ICU beds are COVID patients? Elective surgery has increased hospitalizations.

It’s because the hospitals have been empty for normal cases and they now get $36,000 extra for each COViD hospitalization ... need it or not

In the summertime most people in Arizona are inside air conditioned buildings or they are at the beach in San Diego.

Three and a half weeks ago, many AZ cities (e.g., Scottsdale) were the subject of widespread looting. Little social distancing was happening as these thugs pillaged the Apple store, etc.
It was reported at the time here at FR...

AZ is now seeing the fallout of that.

Nationally (according to the CDC) the percentage of all inpatient hospital beds occupied by all patients is 65%, and the percentage of all ICU beds occupied is 62%.

I'm not at all sure that if I arrived at an ER with a sprained ankle, and I cleared my throat or was found to have a slight fever, that I wouldn't be admitted to the hospital as a suspected Covid-19 case.

With that low utilization, hospitals must be desperate for patients right now.

There is an untold story—that may not be understood before it is too late.

Of course, almost no young people are going to die from this thing.

Of course, most young people will be technically “infected”.

However, try to pay a lot of attention in coming months on the status of those who are “recovered” from this virus.

It has a nasty habit of reducing lung and heart capacity.

That won’t kill anybody who is young and healthy, but it will mean some professional athletes won’t be able to excel any more, some workers with jobs requiring hard physical labor will have to stop doing those jobs etc.

This is not the end of the world, but it is not a nothingburger either.

Details matter.

From a local physician friend: You’re seeing hospitalization numbers rise because everyone who goes to the hospital is tested for COVID-19. Remember those procedures that were canceled for three months? When these people go the hospital to get their procedures and test positive, they are now a COVID hospitalization... regardless of their reason for being in the hospital.

Point being, “we” don’t know crap about The C. Yet, everything must be shut down? Really? Take for example The Masks”. “We” have no clue if they are affective.

“WE” being the politicians and government agencies. Tell you what. Look up OSHA rules on minimum oxygen intake. Also, look up the oxygen intake number when wearing “a mask”. The minimum is 19.5. When wearing a mask that number immediately decreases below the minimum. BTW, according to OSHA regulations, this causes permanent brain damage. The “doctors” on TV do not tell you that.

I am going out daily, just like I did in late February before this BS lockdown occurred.

Elderly or sick.... Stay home. I will be out and about.

Bovine Scat. One of my best friends 19 year old had it. She was sick for 4 weeks. She got it on a mission trip to South Padre back in March. Posts like yours show just how ignorant people are. SMH.

Do we know for a fact that any COVID-19 mutation won’t attack the younger population?

Most mutations get weaker. I know that Florida has a population of 23 million. Did you know, not one, not one person under the age of 25 died? The death rate for over 80 was greater than all ages between 0-65 years old.

Healthy under 65 the death rate is a normal flu. Protect the elderly, figure out better treatment methods, and let people lead their lives.

The cases are up because the younger people are out in society - out en-masse.

exactly my point.

Yes and people are admitted into the hospital every day for a variety of reasons - elective surgery, heart attack, etc. but now if they also test positive for CV it is being called a CV hospitalization.

It was a free country not very long ago. My guess is you still have the right to stay home if you feel unsafe. Please do so. We will all be happy with that decision.

The swell in cases came as President Donald Trump held a rally at a Phoenix megachurch Tuesday. Well that is obviously the cause...

Incubation time cut from 2 weeks to 18 hours. It truly is the Chuck Norris of viruses.
