Record-breaking Coronavirus hospitalizations 'overwhelm' Arizona, Texas as governors struggle to contain surge

Coronavirus hospitalizations in Arizona and Texas have hit record numbers as cases continue to surge in states in the South and the West, overwhelming medical professionals.

Arizona reported a record high of 3,591 new cases Tuesday, with nearly 60,000 known cases in the state overall. The swell in cases came as President Donald Trump held a rally at a Phoenix megachurch Tuesday.

There was a surge in the number of inpatient beds occupied by positive or suspected COVID-19 patients, with 2,136 beds occupied, compared to 1,992 Sunday, according to data from the state's Department of Health Services.

Meanwhile, 84 percent of intensive care unit beds were in use at Arizona hospitals and 83 percent of inpatient beds were in use as of Monday, according to the data.

"Each day I've been going into work over the last month is worse, and what I mean by worse is ... just overwhelmed with COVID patients," said Dr. Frank LoVecchio, who works in several Arizona hospitals in emergency medicine and public health.

LoVecchio, who works with the Banner Health, the Valleywise Health and the Abrazo Health systems in Arizona, said hospitals have been very good about getting everyone personal protective equipment, or PPE, and offering counseling help lines for providers. Hospitals had been doing the best they could, he said, converting space to handle the increase in COVID patients.

But with the rush, medical staff were becoming exhausted.

"They complain of exhaustion — physical, mental — many times they're dehydrated and tired," he said. "I think back to like seven, eight months ago, one of our big concerns was nurses, doctors stay hydrated, make sure you get snacks, sleep well, take your breaks. That stuff is out the window."

They are calling anyone who goes to the hospital for any reason who also tests positive for CV a CV hospitalization.

Are you sure of that? I would think a positive CV test would get you counted as a CV case, but non necessarily a "CV-hospitalization" instance

Doesn't a "CV-Hospitalization" actually require hospitalization, rather than just consulation or out-patient visit?

They are calling all hospitalizations no matter what as Covid-19.

THAT IS EXACTLY what they are doing.

There are PLENTY of politicized doctors and nurses who would say almost anything to prop-up Democrats. Take that to the bank.

I track the number of Covid19 infections in various places. In California this virus is spreading like wildfire. In Illinois they haven’t had a new infection in weeks. They lie like no one else can.

Well that is obviously the cause...

CFR has been about 10% which is outrageously high and bound to continue falling with better and smarter treatment.

That being said, we’ll find out in three or four weeks if treatment has noticeably improved or (hopefully) we are dealing with a weakened strain.

Brother the media outright lies and I trust not a word they say. Have seen too much on false reporting. Seen empty hospitals and false reports.

People have no self accountability.

These people scoffed at others that choose to wear masks.

Arizona politicians have shown little public interest with sluggish response time.

Wow. Just one day “incubation” for a surge. The virus is really something.

There was a surge in the number of inpatient beds occupied by positive or suspected COVID-19 patients,

Compare the rate of testing over time to see if there's a surge. And how many are positive and how many are suspected. Why are you lumping them together when you are given each group separately. We all know why.

The cases are up because the younger people are out in society - out en-masse.

The daily deaths are declining because 1. The young people aren't likely to be fatally sickened by the virus, and 2. The numbers of old people who are likely to die from contracting the WuHan Bat Flu are diminishing daily due to a shrinking population.

In Yakima Wa, 1 of 2 hospitals went out of business, now the other is “overwhelmed” with cases. Reports are that cases are now classified by something as minor as coming to hospital to get tested.

Well, yeah. But the whole goal of the initial lockdown was to give medical facilities time to prepare and gain knowledge of treatment options. We can’t stop this from being endemic. Curve was flattened and now we have to work toward immunity.

+1....They are also classifying people getting tests as patients, whether they stay or go home and wait for the test.
