Record-breaking Coronavirus hospitalizations 'overwhelm' Arizona, Texas as governors struggle to contain surge

Coronavirus hospitalizations in Arizona and Texas have hit record numbers as cases continue to surge in states in the South and the West, overwhelming medical professionals.

Arizona reported a record high of 3,591 new cases Tuesday, with nearly 60,000 known cases in the state overall. The swell in cases came as President Donald Trump held a rally at a Phoenix megachurch Tuesday.

There was a surge in the number of inpatient beds occupied by positive or suspected COVID-19 patients, with 2,136 beds occupied, compared to 1,992 Sunday, according to data from the state's Department of Health Services.

Meanwhile, 84 percent of intensive care unit beds were in use at Arizona hospitals and 83 percent of inpatient beds were in use as of Monday, according to the data.

"Each day I've been going into work over the last month is worse, and what I mean by worse is ... just overwhelmed with COVID patients," said Dr. Frank LoVecchio, who works in several Arizona hospitals in emergency medicine and public health.

LoVecchio, who works with the Banner Health, the Valleywise Health and the Abrazo Health systems in Arizona, said hospitals have been very good about getting everyone personal protective equipment, or PPE, and offering counseling help lines for providers. Hospitals had been doing the best they could, he said, converting space to handle the increase in COVID patients.

But with the rush, medical staff were becoming exhausted.

"They complain of exhaustion — physical, mental — many times they're dehydrated and tired," he said. "I think back to like seven, eight months ago, one of our big concerns was nurses, doctors stay hydrated, make sure you get snacks, sleep well, take your breaks. That stuff is out the window."

Makes sense. Now explain why New Mexico, Louisiana, Kansas and Oklahoma aren’t spiking way up.

Every state gets their peak. The peaking states will head down again soon.

“Look up OSHA rules” correct you are-in my line of work, I*’m familiar with what OSHA says about masks-I’m also elderly-I go outside to do my job and stop at the grocery store once a week in my rural area on the way home-all unmasked, as are almost all my neighbors...

I’m pretty sure I had the Wuhan virus back in mid March, along with a couple of neighbors-we’d all gotten gas at the same station on the main highway-which is always crowded with commercial trucks gassing up-no one died, no one went to doc or hospital-we took homeopathic remedies, zinc and supplementary vitamin D and other vitamins-we went outside and soaked up sun on our properties, we did not go outside that area or interact with others for a couple of weeks-although we were only ill for 3-6 days-to keep everyone else safe...

We are all over 65, all working people too-I want the Karens to stop trying to “protect” me by trying to shove me indoors away from the fresh country air and sunshine-and keeping me from making money from doing business to pay my bills-I’m healthy, strong and intelligent enough to protect myself if I feel the need to do so-these alarm-lovers need to start minding their own f***ing business-they can stay indoors, wear a mask all day, whatever makes them comfortable-but leave the rest of us alone to make a living and enjoy our day...

If a person goes to the hospital in WA and gets tested, they are counted as a patient. They are not counting admissions, they are counting traffic.

A jump of 144 beds statewide is a spike?

The masks do nothing! The virus is going to run it’s course.

on one hand, classifying as CCPVirus does add to the numbers.

On the other hand, it triggers the govt program that pays the cost for the uninsured, medicare, underinsured (passing the cost from state to fed).

Not sure about those that have group ins, tho. If they still have a deductible. Maybe someone else knows.

No it doesn’t. We just see a lot of people in foreign nations forced to wear masks. We don’t know if the lock down hurt or helped contain the virus. If you want to wear a mask, feel free to do so.

What is bankrupting the hospitals is the inability to do elective surgeries.

I guess I don’t understand the kurfuffel over $36k?

A hospital bill for an ICU survivor of CCPVirus was over a million dollars.

So are the hospitals getting $36K instead of a million dollars? Or is the hospital getting an additional 3.6% surcharge on top of the $1MM ?

and if they ARE getting an additional 3.%6, considering hospitals are having to give doctors and nurses hazard pay, why is that a problem?

How many are imports from south of the border?

Also, how may are double counts? Go into urgent care with COVID, check the box. Get referred to a hospital for follow on treatment, check the box. Go see your primary care after your hospital visit, check the box.

One patient counted three times, much like liberal voting patterns.

When the governor is “inviting” people to stay inside, I fear the next step is a more foreceful request.

God help us all.

The number of deaths per million is the number to watch. All these states with spiking cases, if they keep the old people safe, they’ll be fine. None of them are anywhere near NY, NJ,CT and Mass. in the only statistic that counts for me. A case with mild symptoms or none at all is the flu or a cold. The media wants the red states to go through another lock down, is what this is.

NY, NJ did the lock down and still killed 1,500 per million citizens.
