Opposition to proposed hate crimes legislation in Georgia is building from lawmakers and civil rights groups previously in favor of it after Republicans in the state Senate added police as a protected class.
The ACLU and NAACP, as well as the state House and Senate Democratic caucuses, are among those now standing against the hate crimes measure.
The Rev. James Woodall, state president of the Georgia NAACP, said in an interview Monday that the addition of language protecting law enforcement is toxic and a poison pill.
We are demanding that the legislature amend this bill to take out the first responders provision and to include data collection so that we can ensure the lives of all Georgia citizens are valued under the law, Woodall said.
Calls for Georgia to remove itself from the list of four U.S. states without a hate crimes law have grown following the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man pursued and fatally shot near Brunswick, Georgia in February. Three white men, including a father and son, are charged in his death. The calls have intensified further amid nationwide protests over racial injustice and police brutality.
Passed over a year ago by the state House, House Bill 426 would impose additional penalties for crimes motivated by the victims race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender or disability. It was amended Friday in a Senate committee to also include status of being or having been a first responder by Republicans on the panel.

All hate is equal, some hate is more equal than others.

Another Reverend eh?
And now they’ve moved from asking to demanding. More and more the Leftists and Democrats remind me of spoiled brats.
Keep it up, left wing scum.
its nice to see the GOP is still alive ..
There should be no such thing as a hate crime. Thats because it requires impossible knowledge of whats going on inside a persons mind. If Person A assaults Person B, then vigorously prosecute Person A for assault. Enough with this Orwellian stuff.
Yeah, I know Im dreaming. Hate crime laws are only going to be expanded as time goes on.
“...Yeah, I know Im dreaming. Hate crime laws are only going to be expanded as time goes on....”
Unfortunately, I have to agree with ya.
FWIW, God forbid, but if pedoJoe wins the POTUS and the senate flips over to the communists, within 6-12 months we’ll see “hate crime” legislation that will shut down every church and synagogue in the USA. They will then release their “flying monkeys” to raze them all to the ground.
Their DemoVirus BS was a test run to see how far they could push it, and it was quite successful for them. It’s coming....
Good this hate crimes legislation is BS.
That's the way, uh-huh, I like it.
This is the correct answer. If murder = 10 years but murder + hate = 12 years, simply make murder = 12 years. Maybe if the murderer says I love you when they kill you they would only get 8 years?
Of course the opposite is now true, if you claim a racial or sexual slight much crime is approved and not prosecuted.
I don’t care what is going on in some one’s head I just want a deterrent and enforcement to all crime.
The Republican majority led by Senator Bill Cowsert caved and removed the language. They are as worthless as the Republicans in Washington.
The Senate passed the bill without protection for cops 47-6. Republicans hold 34 seats in the 56 seat Senate.
