Elihu Yale sits in the center of this group of British gentlemen while a younger slave with a metal collar around his neck, at right, looks on. Yale University owns this portrait.
An online petition is seeking to change the name of the nations third oldest college from Yale to Hale.
The idea is to replace a controversial figure who oversaw slave trading with the name of an American hero who died during the Revolutionary War.
The petition, at Change.org, presents a study in contrasts.
Elihu Yale (1649-1721) was president of an outpost in Madras, India of the British East India Company and from there oversaw a flourishing slave trade.
In 1718, Elihu Yale gave some of his wealth for a building at a college in New Haven, Connecticut, and school officials named the school after him.
Nathan Hale (1755-1776) was a Connecticut teacher who joined the Continental Army early in the Revolutionary War and rose to captain. He volunteered to go on a dangerous spying mission in New York, was captured by the British, and was hanged without trial in Manhattan, after being denied a Bible and a clergyman. He was 21.
British officers were impressed enough by Hales behavior to record portions of his speech at the gallows, including a line that has come down through history: I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.
Hale did not own slaves, and was well thought of by friends, relatives, and soldiers under his command.
Hale was also a 1773 graduate of the college that currently bears Elihu Yales name.

Hail, Hale!
Why not “Jale”? Then every ex-con could say they went to “Jale”. /s
I suggest Tamil, the name of the slave boy.
Yeah, well, aside from the whole getting caught thing, and the specious last words, and being considered a patriot....
Hey, how about John Sydney McCain III University?
I thought they were going for Alan Hale, in honor of Jonas Grumby.
What do they do with Columbia University named after Columbus?
Do they now name it after that great American explorer, Malcolm X University?
and they already say, I didnt go to Penn St I went to the State Pin.
What about the name — United States of America? Doesn’t ‘America’ have an association with Christopher Columbus?
Everything must go. All sales are final.
Hale... OK, and even rhymes with the original name, “Yale.”
But, in these days of anti-whiteness, never “Pale.”
Or Alan Hale Sr, loved his pea-shooting.
Did you know he played Little John in 1922 and 1938?

Our family has a very close connection to a family with last name Hale. I don’t think any of them went to Y/Hale.

How about if we make the name of the school “Whale”? That would be a good way to honor all the large sea mammals that were hunted worldwide and persecuted so women could wear whale-bone corsets, and so on ad nauseam.
It is hard to know when people are joking (unless the /s is invoked).
I am NOT JOKING.
And change the pretentious rowing team to spear-chucking.
How about Kale to honor Vegans.
Change it to Male and make it a homo only school. The liberals wouldn’t know how to react
I am offended by the goofy wigs.
Sort of off topic:
I remember reading that Hale was the worst possible choice for a secret mission.
It seems that he was like a rock star in the colonies. People he never met, knew him on sight.
He had the reputation of being the most handsome man in the colonies and all the women in New Haven were in love with him.
He was calling himself by another name when apprehended. While being takin-in, someone in the crowd yelled, Nathan...its Nathan Hale!!
