Isn’t diabetes a inability to regulate insulin often caused by an excess of carbohydrates, or of an excess of liquid seed oils (which cause problem in cell energy balance)?
(The article speculates that it causes type 1 diabetes. Dietary diabetes is type 2)

That’s type 2. In type 1 the cells that produce insulin are destroyed.

That’s Type 2 & there is an “epidemic” of Type 2 in this country (or pre-diabetes, headed for full blown Type 2). You can reverse Type 2 in most cases with a low carb diet ... even get off insulin, meds for high BP caused by hyperinsulinemia, etc..
My question, after reading this, does the diabetes develop in people with metabolic syndrome (which predisposes people to a more severe course of COVID) or are they seeing it in truly healthy people (no symptoms of metabolic syndrome). If I had to guess, I would say those with metabolic syndrome get ‘tipped over the edge’ into diabetes since they’re already headed that way.
As for vegetable seed oils, they should be labeled “toxins” or “poison” ....here is an excellent presentation on why & their relationship with heart disease (saturated fat is not the culprit!) & other diseases:
