[MT] Group Claims Enough Signatures For Recreational Marijuana Vote
Montana Public Radio ^ | June 19, 2020 | EDWARD O'BRIEN

A group seeking to legalize recreational marijuana in Montana says it has gathered enough signatures to put the question to voters in November's election.

The ballot committee, New Approach Montana, says it has turned in 52,000 signatures in support of a ballot initiative to allow retail marijuana sales at a 20% tax rate.

Organizers also turned in more than 80,000 signatures for an accompanying constitutional initiative that would allow the legal age buying age of marijuana to be set at 21.

The committed collected signatures from all 100 state House districts, spokesman Pepper Petersen said, all while taking precautions to prevent disease transmission during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“We think it represents what’s going to happen in November, “ he said. “There’s going to be an overwhelming support for this in every corner of the state. There’s not a legislative district that’s not represented in the signatures. We feel like the support out there is deep and wide, and it’s really exciting.”

Election officials must verify signatures before the measures are approved for the ballot. According to the Associated Press, campaign finance reports show New Approach Montana spent more than $1 million collecting signatures.

Good posts, Noble - but you are wasting your breath on these freedom hating luddites. I’ve enjoyed the herb for 52 years and currently own three houses, two of them rentals - all paid for including my residence. Must be all that weed I smoked.

I'm not really talking to them, but through them to any lurkers that might be taken in by their nonsense.

Apparently you should have smoked even more. ;)

Thank you for your service! I’ve spent years interviewing vietnam vets and plan to write a book one day about individual soldier/marine/sailor/airman stories. If you’re up for a answering some question via Free republic mail, please let me know. Thx!

Legalize it, tax it and watch the tax revenues rocket up.

Tax it at too high a rate and people will just continue to buy from the existing black market.

IMO states ought to set the rate below the revenue-maximizing level, in order to take more business away from criminal sellers.

Since you haven't been banned even with your near-identical logins, it looks like there's nothing to evade.

Load of bullshit. I know lots of people who smoke weed for various reasons. No one is ever violent. Weed does not make a person violent or crazy or hysterical. It makes people relaxed.
Violent?? Try meth crack coke speed lsd alcohol. Those make people violent. I have no doubt the young anarchists are strung out on drugs. But it’s not the weed making them violent.

"I’ve enjoyed the herb for 52 years"
then that MUST mean you're on heroin now because most people here KNOW it's a gateway drug. A person can't just smoke it and enjoy it because they MUST get violent and go to stronger and stronger drugs. I've read it here many times. That's not been my experience with the tokers but all of these experts here say my experience must be an anomaly.

For decades now, any Montanan who wanted to get stoned could. The only question is: who does he give his money to - a businessman or a criminal?
