The Associated Press changed its writing style guide Friday to capitalize the “b” in the term Black when referring to people in a racial, ethnic or cultural context, weighing in on a hotly debated issue.
The change conveys “an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa,” John Daniszewski, AP’s vice president of standards, said in a blog post Friday. “The lowercase black is a color, not a person.”
The news organization will also now capitalize Indigenous in reference to original inhabitants of a place.
Daniszewski said the revisions aligned with long-standing identifiers such as Latino, Asian American and Native American. He said the decision followed more than two years of research and debate among AP journalists and outside groups and thinkers.
“Our discussions on style and language consider many points, including the need to be inclusive and respectful in our storytelling and the evolution of language,” he wrote. “We believe this change serves those ends.”
The AP said it expects to make a decision within a month on whether to capitalize the term white. Among the considerations are what that change might mean outside the United States.

So blacks are now considered superior to whites. But that’s not racist.
I was in a restaurant listening to the two black ladies behind me. One had just returned from “finding her roots” in Africa. She said, (Approximately) that she had never felt more uncomfortable and hated. The blacks in Africa can tell what tribe you are from by the way you look and practically all the people from that tribe looked alike. They hate anybody not from their tribe and they especially hated blacks from America. She said she would never go back there.
So, all blacks have a shared history...sure.
I am glad she had this experience because you could hear how it had changed her view of being an American.
Living in MS in the early 60’s if you wanted to get your ass beat call a Negro “Black”. Negro, Colored, and even the N Word was preferable.
Since I’m white should I call myself not Black so I can capitalize?

Back around the time that South Africa was ending apartheid, I read a book on the South African military. One of the things that struck me was an anecdote about the fighting in Southwest Africa (now Namibia). Defectors from the SWAPO guerrillas would come into SADF camps to surrender--and complain about the racism and discrimination on the insurgent side.
When I read an autobiography of Nelson Mandela, I was struck by the fact that the ANC's guerrilla wing, the "Spear of the Nation," was rendered in the Xhosa language. Mandela was a Xhosa.
[And, if I remember correctly, the Xhosa immigrated into South Africa after the Boers colonized it. So, who has the better claim on the land?]
And “Yellow”, as in Journalism.
Ran into two brothers from Nigeria several years back that had immigrated to the U.S. They had nothing good to say about about most of the American blacks that they worked with; calling them lazy. This was in Baltimore, so the environment there speaks for itself.
I worked with a very nice African man in the schools. He hated American blacks and avoided them as much as possible, especially after one stuck a gun in his chest demanding his car and he didn't know what the "brother" wanted due to not understanding "ebonics."
He lost a week of work because he was so traumatized by the experience.
He asked to teach ESL after his first year because he preferred working with Hispanic children. He told me he felt American blacks were rude, violent and had a sense of entitlement considering what is handed to them.
I think it is time to capitalize the l and p in “Leftist Propaganda”.
Many Nigerians in America are from the Ibo tribe—smart, hard-working, want to be left alone and leave others alone.
The leftists _hate_ them.
Finally! And end to racism! Sheesh. Why didn’t somebody think of that before? Glad that’s all over with.
