WASHINGTON The U.S. attorney who oversaw key prosecutions of allies of President Donald Trump and an investigation into Trumps personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani is resigning from his post, officials said Friday.
Geoffrey Berman is stepping down as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Attorney General William Barr said in a statement.
Barr said Trump intends to nominate Jay Clayton, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to the post. The U.S. attorney in New Jersey, Craig Carpenito, will serve as the acting U.S. attorney in Manhattan, beginning on July 3, Barr said.
It was unclear why Berman was leaving the position after serving for more than two years. The announcement, made late Friday, came after Barr visited New York City and met with local police officials there.

Whoa, this is some serious swamp draining. /s
“Berman is Trump’s appointee. “
Former, he’s now a former appointee.
AG Barr is in charge.
Something smelled rotten. Time for the garbage to go out.
Trump did not appoint him...he was appointed by the court to fill the vacant position until there was a confirmed candidate. Hate to say it...but see wiki
If I were trump and Mcconnell, Id make this priority next week. Get him out by Thursday. Oh of course Nadler invited him to come talk to him and his committee. They are transparent as heck.
Trump indeed appointed Berman, after interviewing him personally. When Berman had not been confirmed by the Senate within 120 days, the position became legally vacant, and the judges elected him to remain in office as Acting US Attorney.
