David Cameron leads former PMs attacking 'mistake' of scrapping DfID — as Boris Johnson says combining it with Foreign Office will end UK being used as 'giant cashpoint in the sky' [Department for International Development]

Former Conservative prime minister David Cameron lashed out at Boris Johnson today, branding his decision to axe the UK’s foreign aid department a “mistake”.

In what is believed to be his first policy intervention since quitting in 2016. ex-premier Mr. Cameron joined his Labour predecessors to criticize Mr. Johnson’s decision to scrap the Department for International Development.

The Prime Minister told MPs in the Commons today it will be merged into the Foreign Office to create the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, in a bid to “maximize British influence” overseas.

He said the move would “unite our aid with our diplomacy and bring them together in our international effort”. […]

After the announcement. Mr. Cameron tweeted: “The Prime Minister is right to maintain the commitment to 0.7 (percent) — it saves lives, promotes a safer world and builds British influence. But the decision to merge the departments is a mistake. More could and should be done to coordinate aid and foreign policy, including through the National Security Council, but the end of DfID will mean less expertise, less voice for development at the top table and ultimately less respect for the UK overseas.”

Tony Blair, who was in power when it was formed, said it was “wrong and regressive”.

“I am utterly dismayed by the decision to abolish DfID,” he said. “We created DfID in 1997 to play a strong, important role in projecting British soft power. It has done so to general global acclaim. The strategic aims of alignment with diplomacy and focus on new areas of strategic interest to Britain could be accomplished without its abolition.” …

less respect for the UK overseas.

The U.K. still has respect overseas? I thought she was regarded as a tool to be manipulated, perhaps played off against other tools. Nothing that I would confuse for respect, except among some of the more avante garde conspiracy theorists.

What can anyone expect out of that “liberal conservative” who rammed the “Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act 2013” down the country’s throat and tried so hard to keep from fulfilling his promise for a referendum to leave the EU for as long as he could.

Foreign aid = bribery of third world despots to obtain lucrative home industry contracts (alternatively: subsidizing local industries to “do something” in 3rd world crapistans in order to be personally paid off after leaving office). Kabuki. Charades. Pick your favorite euphemism.

Yes; it’s second-world thinking rather than first-world.
