NEW DELHI/SRINAGARIndia’s army said on June 16 that 20 of its soldiers had been killed in clashes with Chinese troops at a disputed border site, in a major escalation of a weeks-long standoff between the two Asian giants in the western Himalayas.
China’s foreign ministry confirmed there had been a “violent physical confrontation” on June 15 in the border area. It made no mention of casualties, but India’s foreign ministry said there had been casualties on both sides.
An Indian government source said the troops had fought with iron rods and stones, and that no shots had been fired.
The deaths were the first since the last major border clash in 1967 between the nuclear-armed neighborsalso the world’s two most-populous countrieswhich have been unable to settle the dispute along their lengthy frontier.
China and India have traded accusations over who was to blame for the June 15 clashes in the snow deserts of Ladakh, which came after military commanders held meetings to resolve the situation.
Since early May, hundreds of soldiers have fronted up against each other at three locations, each side accusing the other of trespassing.
During the recent conflict, the Chinese have erected 80 to 100 tents, brought in heavy vehicles and heavy weapons, and have started building bunkers in the Galwan Valley.
The Chinese regimes act of building bunkers is a tactic it has used with other countries it shares borders with, Aparna Pande, a research fellow and director of Hudson Institutes Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia in Washington, previously told The Epoch Times.
On the night of June 15, a group of soldiers came to blows in the Galwan Valley, the Indian army said in a statement, adding that the two sides had now disengaged.

This is a big deal.
“...the troops had fought with iron rods and stones...”
Someone has a sense of humor.
It could be but I dont think so. I think it is a probe of intentions. China doesnt care about losing a few pieces of cannon fodder. if China wants a fight They will mount an organized large scale invasion.
RE: This is a big deal.
Military experts say one reason for the face-off is that India has been building roads and airfields to improve connectivity and narrow the gap with China’s far superior infrastructure.
At Galwan, India completed a road leading to an airfield last October. China has asked India to stop all construction.
India says it is operating on its side of the Line of Actual Control, the de facto border.
[This is a big deal.]
How many ChiComs got shot?
47 Chinese killed, many more injured. It was not hand to hand combat....they went at it.
“This is a big deal.”
Not really, they have been fighting for decades along that border.
These border skirmishes have been going on periodically forever.
There are believed to have been a number of casualties on the Chinese side as well though China hasnt revealed those numbers. According to this site, Indian intercepts revealed China suffered 43 casualties, some with serious injuries and some killed.

At least they will get rid of Antifa and BLM.
More than 900 troops on each side were involved in a physical clash, which started Monday night, lasted several hoursin three phasesand ended on early hours of Tuesday. Most of the deaths have occurred as soldiers fell-off cliffs during a physical fight in the narrow Galwan valley into the river at an altitude of 15,000 feet. Some died due to hypothermia and other due to injuries.
Stones, Steel poles, bamboo poles with nails embed on them, were used by the Chinese, to attack the Indian troops. The Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) of China, have also suffered fatal casualties. There is no number to their casualties. Indian Army categorically said no bullets were fired in clash. The casualty would have been manifold had bullets been fired
The Chicoms, Pakis and India all have deliverable nuclear weapons.
Mr. Rogers would say, it’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood.

Worst incident since 1976. That’s not last year
You are right in China has purposefully been moving a lot of troops and a lot of munitions across the entire border. That’s an incredible amount
Bunkers are the new “wall”
