Beijing closes all schools, bracing for a 2nd wave of the coronavirus

Beijing, China, shuttered in-person classes for all schools on Tuesday, bracing for a new wave of the coronavirus. The closure goes into effect Wednesday.

The capital hub of 20 million people had gone more than 50 consecutive days without a new recorded case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new virus. But last weekend, city officials reported a cluster of 87 new cases, the Financial Times reported, 46 of which were asymptomatic. That cluster emerged in Xinfadi, the largest produce and seafood market in the city.

Xinfadi was closed over the weekend, as were several residential buildings on the west side of Beijing. More than 100 people have gone into a 14-day quarantine.

Who in the world said anything about shutting anything down or sheltering in place? Strawman all the way here. Fake news. I never have and never will be in favor of a lockdown and neither will our President.

And yes, people do die every day. Probably a good idea to work toward preventing preventable deaths. That’s why our President is pushing so hard for a vaccine: to save American lives.

And just because I trust my hearing doesn’t mean I close my eyes while I’m driving. God gave us brains so we can preserve human life. Because human life is precious and worth preserving. So we should take REASONABLE precautions to save lives (not shutting down the economy) while working on new treatments and seeking a vaccine, NOT stick our heads in the sand and pretend there’s nothing we can do about diseases.

SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, like Poliovirus, Hepatitus A, and Rubella. Some viruses of that type have vaccines (like the ones I listed) and some do not.

There are over 135 candidates for a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in trials right now. President Trump is pushing hard to find one that’s safe and effective. It’s not guaranteed by any means, but it’s also not impossible. I don’t believe President Trump is throwing money away on this. I believe he’s putting our tax dollars to good use in an attempt to find something that will save hundreds of thousands of American lives. And I for one completely support him in that effort.
