The Los Angeles Lakers have their eye on an NBA championship when the season resumes next month, but center Dwight Howard said the team will have to do it without him. Howard told CNN on Saturday that given the unrest following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police last month that now is not the time for games. Floyd, like Howard, was African American, and Howard said the black community must put itself first now. "Basketball, or entertainment period, isn’t needed at this moment, and will only be a distraction,” his lengthy statement began. It continued: “I would love nothing more than to win my very first NBA Championship. But the unity of My People would be an even bigger Championship, that’s just too beautiful to pass up. What better time than now for us to be focusing on our families?

Mr. Howard, how about acknowledging the biggest problems in the Black community are Black on Black crime especially killings, and the high rate of out of wedlock births. Many Black men are growing up without fathers and are getting into trouble because they have no guidance. Systemic racism and police brutality are so far down the list of issues destroying Black America!
NBA, NFL, women’s soccer all could go away forever as far as I’m concerned. Actually we could go back to watching local teams play in a field and we’d be just as happy. You don’t need a professional team to tailgate, drink beer and have fun. Really the game is just an excuse.
Heck, I like that this guy seems to have the courage of his convictions.
Instead of having it both ways by wanting to be a millionaire playing basketball, but not willing to stand for his own country’s national anthem, he seems to be willing to take a different approach - one that might effect him personally.
Now, I don’t know anything about this guy or whatever his inclinations are, but actually I like his style, so far.
