Trump loses 2 pivotal allies in his anti-kneeling crusade: NASCAR and the NFL

Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.

This week, they both started to walk away.

Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged “all to speak out and peacefully protest.” Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during pre-race ceremonies.

The moves came in response to the protests that have erupted across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis police. And they reflected shifting cultural attitudes — polls show an increasing percentage of the population view racism as a big problem in the country and the protests as a justified response.

Yet Trump stood his ground. He attacked Goodell, wondering whether the commissioner was telling players “that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the national anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag?” And he separately lashed out about a blossoming discussion about renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders.

The changing tenor from the two leagues could be pivotal for Trump, though. The president has long leaned on the front offices of each organization as he has publicly attacked athletes who took a knee during the national anthem, and privately pressured some team owners to change anthem rules.

I never watched Nascar, but football is a sport my wife and I watched together - about the only thing. This BLM demonic dump has me shaking my head and not looking forward to anything these coming seasons.

NASCAR, a sport which mainly appeals to southern rednecks has told southern rednecks they are not welcome. That ought to work out real well for them.

Sorry guys but whenever the NBA and the NFL come back I’ll be watching my favorite teams.

And, I believe, so will Trump. Taking a principled stand against the idiotic idea of kneeling by professional athletes is perfectly OK with me. I would encourage it. But giving up the offending sports is just silly. Trump should not have said he would. It will be a promise he won’t keep.

There is a wave of crap hitting the US and corporations are jumping on board. I can’t believe it after all the president has done to improve business. The disloyal bastards are betting that Biden wins and the whole country will do the Pelosi knee bend. Yup — they are betting on Biden.

“This type of kneeling started to make Kaepernick look nobler when he was boycotting the National Anthem - by faking a godly kneel.”

Kaepernick’s original protest was to sit on his buttocks.

Then a PR firm came up with the idea of having him kneel invoking the image of reverent prayer.

I’m sure there will still be plenty of old, fat, white men spending money to wear another man’s name on their backs. Muh sportsball!

I would say start attending local high school games for something that at least is close to actual community, but those will probably all be cancelled due to the virus hoax.

Corporations want power, they’ll take a temporary hit in profits to achieve it.

This is the consequence of not enforcing Anti-Trust Laws.

It amazes me the number of organizations that are biting the hands that feed them. The very groups whose members have profited so much from America’s freedom and capitalistic system seem to truly despise this country that’s given them their wealth and opportunities. Sad. And disgusting.

I don’t think so!
The people who watched those sports in the past, are not as engaged as they used to be. Also, their disgust for the management capitulation will probably solidify the support for the President.
Drew Brees and JJ Watts recent statements bolster this belief.

And they think short term. This is a short term win to ride the wave of discontent. It’s going to eat them alive long term.

“Sorry guys but whenever the NBA and the NFL come back I’ll be watching my favorite teams.”

There is a religious justification for not responding when your enemy slaps both of your jowls. It takes a strong person to take it.

You have had both of your jowls slapped hard. I hope you are a strong believer and not just a weak consumer.

Fake news.
NFL has never been Trump allies let alone “pivotal Trump allies”.
Meanwhile, NFL fans overwhelmingly support Trump as do NASCAR fans.

What you have to realize is that the Left years ago targeted the Corporations for takeover, and they have successfully infiltrated them. These aren’t your father’s Corporations.

Yes, and not only that the corporations are for Biden because China wants Trump out and Biden to win. Biden will go back to appease and sell out to China. He’s already done that in the past with China and corporations like Disney want to make a lot of money in China — so Biden is their man.
