I have an Ithaca 16 gauge pump that with # 3 shot is more than up to the task.
It is light and easily maneuvered.

Best shotgun for home defense?
Remington or Mossberg. Both are used by LEO/Military, replacement parts are easy to find, are cheap and they work.
My personal favorite is the Remington 870 in its various short barrel incarnations.
