In Backstage Passes & Backstabbing Bastards by Al Kooper (who played organ on Bringing It All Back Home and albums by Jimi Hendrix and more plus had his own Blood Sweat and Tears group) he was ambushed in NYC by several black men.
While they were beating him and he fell to his knees he laughed inside thinking "Hey, you guys, I'm a lifelong liberal. I have always been on your side. I'm not your enemy." They beat him dropped him after amusing themselves a while.
Did not know he wrote a book.
If not for his keyboards, "Like a Rolling Sone" would have been just another Dylan folk song.
