After kneeling for close to nine minutes before the cameras Monday morning, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced the Justice in Policing Bill of 2020. Following bipartisan support for reforms, some including Black Caucus Chair Rep. Bass (D-Calif.), hoped for a cooperative tackling of the issue. First steps by Pelosi, however, suggest that this attempt is falling into the same partisan trap previous attempts at reform have.
Rumors began swirling the morning of Pelosis announcement that Republicans had been blocked from contributing to the immense bill. Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) confirmed that was the case.
As a Member of the Judiciary Committee, a lawyer, and former JAG Officer, I was not included in the drafting of this bill and neither were any of my Republican colleagues, Steube said in a statement to The Federalist. This was a partisan attempt by House Democrats to message to their progressive base and not come up with bipartisan solutions that would actually help unify the country.
Representative Armstrong (R-N.D.), also a member of the Judiciary Committee charged with handling law enforcement matters, confirmed the leadership’s stonewalling. For Armstrong, the partisanship came as no surprise.
From serving on the Judiciary Committee for 15 months, I would be surprised if it went any other way at this point. And I have to be clear that this isnt all Democrats, not even all Democrats on the Committee, but it is the leadership,” Armstrong told The Federalist.
While there is broad consensus that action should be taken after the death of George Floyd, disagreement remains on methods, but thats a natural part of the process.
Consider the 2018 criminal justice reform bill. With the support of President Donald Trump, Congressional Republicans, and Democrats, the First Step Act removed thousands of years of unnecessary sentencing. At every level, there was GOP and presidential involvement. Yet these lessons have seemingly been forgotten by the current leadership. Its a mistake that may well sink the chance for immediate reform; even if the bill passes the Democrat-controlled House, it will still need Republican approval. Good-faith debate on methods will be a necessary step for change.
Despite Pelosi’s actions, there is still hope for reform. There are many ideas to make policing more effective without punishing good cops, or hamstringing law enforcement through defunding. Reforming qualified immunity, keeping track of bad officers, and devoting greater resources for safety and bystander training are just a few of these ideas.
I dont know a single person who thinks that cop shouldve had a job when it happened, Armstrong said, adding that if the leadership allowed Republican input, they would be able to move things forward. But such openness would be a surprise, he said, and thats unfortunate all the time, but thats really unfortunate in this instance.
most people know what’s going on with this situation they would applaud the Senate from adopting bad reforms. DOJ does not need Congress and is working on implementing reforms. The choke hold is looked at being banned except for cases where lethal force is involved.
.....by any means necessary. Bottom line: Nasty Pelosi gets away with it.
they had both houses for 2 years they could have done whatever they wanted to do,
Paul Rino Ryan bears a lot of responsibility for that... He of the I can’t even outdebate Joey B...
Probably had Mittens whispering in his ear the whole time to the tune of “ how did he get elected, and we couldn’t “
LOL - yes, you would think since democrats have failed at this looting/violence/police issue in every State they control - - AND we're succeeded in every State we control - that they would listen to our recommendations.
But no - democrats will do more of "the same" stuff that's failed every other time - - expecting a different outcome.
Or
Maybe the race card works best when the black community stays on the plantation and wallows in self-pity - NEVER moving forward...
They are going to stuff this bill the crap they wanted in the stimulus and dare the republicans to vote against this important racial equality legislation. Then use it to beat the republicans like a drum with it all the way until November.
Her rope is running out quickly.
They can’t arrest drug dealers, illegals and a host of other real criminals but they want to arrest people for how they think and feel?
Of course she cut the GOP out. Otherwise they would have found that this bill was already written before Floyd’s death, and just waiting for a suitable incident to bring the bill forward. No real, serious bill is put together this quickly.
The Democrats put the Dem into Demagoguery.
The problem with Republicans going back to the original Me Too Republicans of FDRs era (FDR would announce he had some plans and a Republican rival would say me too to indicate they had a plan as well) is that theres no Left Wing cluster-**** too ****ed that some wont eagerly join in with Democrats, thinking going along with Democrats is what it means to be statesmen or some nonsense.
FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponents Argument
In a way, Im glad that GOPe were cut out of so-called Policing Bill of 2020. This is because the states have never expressly constitutionally given the feds the express power to dictate INTRAstate policing policy.
From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]. United States v. Butler, 1936. (Possible server certificate alert with older browsers.)
In other words, angry, misguided (imo) Pelosi is once again trying to exploit low-information voters on behalf of Democrats, trying to win votes with promise of unconstitutional legislation to keep desperate Dems in power.
Send "Orange Man Bad" federal and state government Democrats and RINOs home in November!
Supporting PDJT with new patriot federal and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping SARS-CoV-2 will effectively give fast-working Trump a "third term" in office imo.
I am ok with Congress eliminating federal funding for local police. The police should be funded locally. Let them pass that and then watch the Minneapolis Dems go ballistic.
REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, VOTE OUT ALL DEMOCRATS ON THE BALLOT.
Help Ive groveled and I cant get up!
It’s time to put a shame-inducing “Title” on Pelosi’s “bill”.
How about: “The Cash for Trial Lawyers / Kickbacks for Pelosi Bill”
Elections have consequences.
