Seeking a city willing to allow a large-scale event amid the coronavirus pandemic, Republicans have tentatively settled on Jacksonville, Fla., as the new destination for the premier festivities of the Republican National Convention in August, according to three Republican officials briefed on the plans.
The details of the arrangement are still in flux and RNC aides are scrambling to determine whether the northern Florida city has enough hotel rooms to accommodate the quadrennial event, which typically kicks off the final stretch of the presidential campaign.
Republican officials were in Jacksonville on Monday looking at the city and the surrounding areas.

The highly unusual decision to seek an alternative location for the conventions marquee events - including speeches by President Trump and others - stems from Trumps desire to accept his partys nomination before an enormous crowd.

“Political party: Republican”
Well, kinda like a Republican, at least that’s what we thought. Yesterday he decided to start taking Civil War statues down all over the city of Jacksonville. Apparently on his own initiative. In addition, the financial/fraud/various problems with the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) may be about to fall on his head. He ain’t the golden boy we all thought he was in his first Mayoral term.
I look forward to having the RNC convention in Jax, but it brings a lot of potential negatives with it. Jax has pretty limited hotel room availability and there’s really nothing to do here for entertainment, other than go to the beach, which is about 20 miles east of downtown. Just my $.02.
Because Jacksonville is Trump Country.
I love it!!
Easy access to Georgia AND South Carolina as well.
Should be good for the region.
Did anyone see that schmuck Jerry Demings (Orange County - Florida mayor) shilling for his wife? He was saying some clap-trap about how his wife’s prospects as VP candidate plus coronavirus made for a bad mix and he hoped the RNC would go someplace different.
What a LOSER mental MIDGET. Orlando is awash with empty hotels and the tourist tax was down by 96% (maybe 97%?).
I can almost imagine Demings the wife complaining that the RNC is a bad racist and the Orlando region really needs the business.
But the Demings they are nice hypocrites, yes they are.
I should add that there are a lot of outstanding golf courses in the Jacksonville area, too. But golf in here in August can be fairly uncomfortable.
Jacksonville, FL was the site I predicted when Trump announced that Charlotte may not be.
If they think it doesn’t have enough hotel rooms they can just do what the Superbowl did when it was in Jax - dock a cruise ship downtown. Instantly there’d be hundreds if not thousands more beds. Considering how bad the cruise lines are hurting right now, I’m sure one would be only too happy to provide a ship that could be booked out for a week or more.
I will add, as a Jax native who now lives in Charlotte, I would look forward to casually dropping comments about how its such a great event and how it brought in a lot of sweet sweet cash to the city. That will be sure to piss locals off quite a bit since the two were rivals to get NFL franchises and traded barbs back and forth for years.
As an additional benefit, it will help to hammer home the point that the asshat Roy Cooper cost Charlotte all that money by playing politics with the Republican convention. We need to vote him out of office in November.
Joe’s looking pretty good. Maybe needs some spray-on tan, but...
Like the tag line says...and this is the RATs biggest worry.
I trust the judgment of PT and his team.
No, no...the Media has to be within shouting distance from the floor, so they can hear the chant..."Stop lying about us!!!"
Elections have consequences, or so I’ve heard.
Haha for some reason I was thinking they would cordon off one of the ends of the stadium and have no seating, but in the round with him right in the middle could get that many in there. There would still be people outside though. Security would be a nightmare.
“Jacksonville has a Republican mayor”
Mayor Lenny Curry, RINO, the mayor Of Jacksonville Florida just had a Confederate statue taken down in the middle of the night and has announced that he will have all other statues taken down. The NFL Jaguars is owned by a Muslim and some say that the same Muslim owns Mayor Curry after the march they put on the other day.
Tell the RNC to forget about Jacksonville since they will be changing their name to Whomeville now.
Im from Jax. Its a great place for a convention. Good convention center, plenty of hotels, good restaurants, the beach, great golf. Conservative too.
It is estimated that pandemic flu will be widespread in the UK within about ten weeks of its first arriving, and will last for about three months. There may be a second wave of infection a few months later. These times are estimates, and may change. By July the pandemic will be on the decline. Attendees can wear masks. I'd be inclined to hold it outdoors in an area people aren't crowded in - with tech today that should be rather simple. I hear Upstate New York has a big farm like area near Woodstock.
An idea worth pursuing. Many folk fail to realize that trying to find a venue large enough with also enough hotel space to host the quadrennial RNC convention on such a short notice is no small task as most venues big enough are already contractually committed to other events. This venue that someone here brags that will seat 14,000 isn't really as big as the RNC was hoping and looking for, 20,000+ but will have to make do.
I’ve been a delegate for 4 state conventions, but never a national convention.
I cannot imagine how a ComDem Convention would be. Nothing is real about them ever.
