Gone With the Wind, the Civil War epic considered a classic of American cinema, has been pulled from HBO Max.
The move comes as media companies reappraise content in light of nationwide protests over police brutality and systemic racism after the death of George Floyd, a Black man killed by Minnesota police. Earlier on Tuesday, Paramount Network cancelled the long-running police reality show Cops.
Long considered controversial for its depiction of Black people and its rose tinted view of slavery, Gone With the Wind faced renewed scrutiny after an op-ed by 12 Years A Slave screenwriter John Ridley published in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. In the op-ed, Ridley called on HBO Max to "consider removing" Gone With the Wind from its platform as the film had its "own unique problem." "It doesn’t just “fall short” with regard to representation. It is a film that glorifies the antebellum south. It is a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color," Ridley wrote.

Well old Adolf and the DNC were birds of a feather in many ways. Antisemitic , hated blacks, liked enslaving people. In their early rise to power the Nazis were real good at street brawling, busting up Jewish shops and things like that.

To pick someone with standards and morality would be acknowledging that standards and morality matter. Standards and morality are a dog whistle of white privilege and is therefore racist and judgmental.

The “silent American” is bending way over backward to tolerate the ongoing anti-white, anti-cop shenanigans.
At some point both sides will look back and ask what was accomplished. The answer will be nothing good because the black’s main problems aren’t the cops or whites and a lot of them know that. A lot of them also are happy with their lives.

Black people did it for two reasons. One of the biggest reasons black entertainers wore blackface is because, very often, they couldn’t work in front of white audiences without it. During those times, white audiences didn’t want to see black performers as human beings, so the only way black artists could even think about making money was by playing a cartoonish, minstrel version of black people. Many entertainers still think that’s a great way to entertain people, but we’ll talk about Tyler Perry’s career another time.
So what is the other reason black people wore blackface?
The University of South Florida’s “History of Minstrelsy” says, “Blackface allowed actors and artists to hide behind a caricature while protesting and mocking the powerful without fear of retaliation. Minstrel performers could safely question authority while claiming to be acting out authentic African American expressions.”
My parents ran a twin theater in downtown Chattanooga in the early 1970s and I watched every film repeatedly. Saw “Gone With The Wind” five times and I still consider it a film ruined by it’s hype, actors who fought and the project carried by too many cooks - way undeserving of it’s awards, reputation and legacy.
But what do I know. My folks had “The Ten Commandments” on one side and “Deep Throat” on the other. The crossover movement between theaters was amazing to see. Dad deserved that industry respect for marketing genius.

True marketing genius... especially when considering the order in which people went to which movie.... being unable to stand the righteousness of Moses vs. the Pharaoh’s pagans, and the doing the nasty on degraded,subjugated (and cast as pervie) women. Women in the Ten Commandments (and the unity of society the Commandments emphasizes for the good of all) are respected, even the jewish slaves of pharaoh, respected by the families of People of the Book.
Have several old friends in Chatt area. Deep down a real traditional kind of place for a railroad town. Gone are those days of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. “Like the sign says— Southern Serves the South”. The Green Light on the Southern.
