Insurrection Act debate rages on in Congress over use of military force to quell protests

Democratic lawmakers in both chambers are sounding alarms about President Trump's continued threats to invoke the Insurrection Act to deal with the protests over the death of George Floyd, who died at the hands of police while in custody in Minneapolis. The centuries-old law allows the president to deploy U.S. military domestically to suppress civil disorder.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced legislation to rein in the president's authority when implementing the Insurrection Act after a heavy militarized presence was seen in Washington, D.C., to control protestors around Lafayette Park near the White House. Blumenthal sees the action at the park as a threat to freedom of assembly.

The bill would require Congress to be consulted before a president can use the law and would limit the use of it to 14 days unless lawmakers agreed to extend it.

Let these Democrats wring their hands all day long About something that’s never gonna happen ! - they’re good at it

the riots already over just look around

They always follow the same pattern of 3 to 6 days by then the police and the military types have your guard up and are starting to crack down and it’s over

If you look at these morons , it’s kids trying to drag giant television out of a Best Buy on Camera ! how bright is that?

The economy is roaring back and people don’t wanna be bothered

It’s time to have some good summer fun -enough of this crap already

These protests - it’s just the children that want to feel like they’re part of some cause

Most of these miscreants are on camera and many wind up facing charges

Americas an extremely well armed society !!!!! there’s no way that any kind of real revolution has a chance here. NONE

There always used to be these rumors that some crazy Muslim extremist group would try this crap too and I laughed about it then as well

The few terrorist attacks we’ve had by Muslims have been on unarmed civilians where no one was allowed to carry

A couple times they got gone down before they even showed up to heckle the rally in Texas

The kids only have so much energy to get out raged in March around and then they’re going to go back to their stupid video games

The “peaceful protests” are a necessary element for the rioters.

The paid protesters and rioters will show as long as they are paid and told to.

Blumenthal is an idiot.

If they want to change the law, that’s fine. It goes through the process—just like in School House Rock.

It won’t get out of committe.

Do they ever actually GET any of that promised “free” stuff? They should sit down and carefully think about it...but being Marxist morons, that’s obviously asking too much...;)

the D-rats are trying to force PDJT to follow in President Lincoln’s footsteps and call out the army to save the republic. They may be surprised, he will do it if he deems it necessary (and many of us see that it is very necessary in several cities right NOW to protect American citizens from this SorozNazi-type insurrection). PDJT could do it very quickly, he won’t stall around once he concludes that he has no other effective course of action. Hopefully, the troops will place these miserable anti-American Congresscritters under arrest to start with, since they are mis-using their public offices and taxpayers resources to promote, endorse, and/or incite these violent riots and attacks on innocent people and their property.)

I agree with you that he will do it and he has many who will back him. The miscreants get all the press coverage from a traitorous, degenerate press!!

I wonder if Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., is aware that over 50 Secret Service agents were injured during an orchestrated and well planned insurrection against the White House? Was there ever an event during which more than fifty Secret Service agents were injured?

What is Blumenthal's definition of a protest, of an insurrection?

Is he aiding and abetting the enemy by attempting to prevent the President from defending himself?

What is going on is far beyond the murder of one man. Everybody, everybody wants justice. We already have 15 dead as a result of the rioting, looting, burning, and wanton destruction of small businesses.

What does Blumenthal propose to deal with this weekend of one million "protesters (and their attendant paid thugs and criminals)?"
