‘Welcome home again’: Small number of Bay Area churches open Sunday, defying coronavirus orders

Pastor Larry Ihrig had a message for congregants as he greeted them with elbow bumps Sunday morning at the entrance to the sanctuary at Livermore’s Celebration Church.

“Welcome home again, guys. I wish we could hug, but we can’t do any of that.”

One congregant rejoiced as they arrived at the doors: “Thank the Lord. We’re finally back.”

More than 100 worshipers came out to the church Sunday morning for the first in-person service in more than two months, curtailed in March by the region’s public health orders, put in place nearly two and a half months ago to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Although Gov. Gavin Newsom issued new guidelines to guide the reopening of places of worship statewide, gatherings of any sort — including religious services — were still banned Sunday by local orders in the Bay Area.

While the vast majority of religious leaders followed the regulations and stuck to their online offerings, some decided to reopen their doors on Sunday in defiance of the orders.

In south San Jose, nearly every parking spot at the Calvary Chapel was taken Sunday morning for the first service back inside the congregation’s church since the start of restrictions in March.

If the worshipers just called their gathering a protest, they could have any number attend.

Australians have been furious politicians from the left and right (like the NSW Premier below) have been saying it’s ok to hold BLM protests this weekend. public anger has been building, given the ridiculous restrictions still in force in a country with a mere 102 covid deaths, most cases acquired overseas, or in nursing home clusters:

5 Jun: 2GB Radio: BREAKING: (New South Wales Premier) Gladys Berejiklian backflips, seeks to ban tomorrow’s protest
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has made an application to the Supreme Court to make tomorrow’s planned protest illegal.
Ms Berejiklian initially said she won’t stifle anybody’s right to protest, insisting demonstrations be done in a COVID safe way, but no limit was placed on the gathering.

The protest planned on Saturday for the CBD, in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, had been given the all-clear by state politicians and police.
Ms Berejiklian says the protest organisers originally put forward a different application, but since it has grown by thousands of people.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet admitted on Ben Fordham Live this morning that the protest should not go ahead.

5 Jun: 9News Australia: AAP: Cops seek injunction against BLM protest
NSW Police are taking legal action to stop a proposed Black Lives Matter protest in Sydney this weekend after the premier said it couldn’t be held safely during the coronavirus crisis.

The Supreme Court challenge will be heard on Friday afternoon with the police commissioner seeking an injunction on the grounds the rally would breach COVID-19 health orders.
“All of us have given up so much and worked so hard to make sure we get on top of the virus,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters on Friday.
“What this protest has turned into is a flagrant disregard of the health rules. We can’t afford to have exceptions for anyone.”...

Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said if the court action was successful and hundreds of thousands of people turned up in contravention of any Supreme Court order “then obviously all of the police powers available to us can be used”.
“But we would much rather see a peaceful outcome,” he said on Friday.

Greens MP David Shoebridge told AAP: “Whatever the police say, thousands of people will attend tomorrow.”...

Under current restrictions, up to 20 people can attend weddings and up to 50 can go to funerals, places of worship, restaurants, pubs and cafes.
Householders are allowed up to five visitors and outdoor gatherings are restricted to 10 people...
