After backlash, New York Times admits it should not have run Tom Cotton op-ed

The New York Times NYT, -1.29% admitted Thursday it erred in publishing an op-ed column by Sen. Tom Cotton calling for the military to quell protests. The hawkish, one-sided column published Wednesday outraged many, including staff members, many of whom tweeted in solidarity : "Running this puts black @nytimes staff in danger." In a statement late Thursday, the Times said Cotton's piece did not meet its standards, though it did not explain exactly why it was published. "We've examined the piece and the process leading up to its publication. This review made clear that a rushed editorial process led to the publication of an Op-Ed that did not meet our standards.
