A number of prominent Catholics have reacted strongly to a statement by Washington, DC, Archbishop Wilton Gregory denouncing President Trump for visiting a shrine to Pope John Paul II.
The former papal nuncio to Washington, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, went so far as to call Archbishop Gregory a false shepherd for his unjust reproach of the John Paul II National Shrine for allowing President Trump to visit.
Edward N. Peters, a well-known Catholic canon lawyer and professor at Sacred Heart Seminary of the Archdiocese of Detroit, tweeted that Gregorys condemnation is devoid of any sense of Christian sentiment.
Brian Burch, the president of CatholicVote, said that Mr. Trumps visit to the shrine and executive order on religious freedom ought to be celebrated rather than condemned.
It is regrettable that the Archbishop of Washington chose this occasion to engage in a partisan attack on the President, especially when the country is in desperate need of healing and unity, Burch said in a statement.
Millions of Catholics in the United States, including many within the Archbishops own flock, are grateful for todays Executive Order, Burch observes, while the archbishops unfortunate partisan attack needlessly politicizes this important issue, and distracts from the plight of vulnerable religious minorities around the world.

Yea, I’m sure the balanced media will report this.
Speaking as a Catholic our shrines should be open for anyone to come and pray. It is not the place of a political Bishop to make political statements saying they cannot.
Too little, too late.
The Left has seized upon the words of a pro-homo Catholic that supports the putsch.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Why are they using shrine instead of church?
He went to inspect the church that the commies attempted to burn to the ground, the church where many presidents have worshipped for 150 years.
It infuriates me that the commies hate Trump so much that they can even make this a contentious issue.
We will be hearing more from the African Queen.
Again I have to ask, are there any actual Catholics in the leadership of the Church?
An agnostic, homosexual hierarchy is a curse on the Church. The scriptures warned that this temporal body would often be infiltrated by evil in disguise. It has been the duty and challenge of Christians throughout the ages to purify the Church and rid it of false leaders.
Yea, Im sure the balanced media will report this.

nope. you know what though? if this is the sentiment of a lot even if not most) of Catholics then the media doesn’t have to say it.
This Bishop reveals that he's like Franciscan: a leftist that used religion to advance himself and spread his politics. He's not a man of God, in his heart he probably doesn't even believe in God because leftists are humanists that believe it the state above all else.
Wanted to fix that autocorrect problem.
Since the Church is just milking seniors to give to South America, I see no future for the Catholic Church. My kids have walked away.
They’ve been purged - from the Chair of St. Peter all the way down.
The Left engineered the abdication of Pope Benedict and paved the way for Enigma Babylon.
There are many, many ‘false shepherds’ across the church and all denominations. By their actions they reveal to whom they belong. God will deal with them harshly because they lead many of their flock astray.
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (2 Tim 4:4)
Two out of my 3 children walked away too. My daughter is the only one who made her confirmation, and she still attends Mass and is raising her kids Catholic. Maybe if the Church didnt allow itself to be weakened over the last 60 years, it couldve withstood these attacks.
I am a cradle Catholic who was blessed to attend Daily Mass until the US Council of Catholic Bishops darkened church worship three months ago.
Gregory is yet another example of the disastrous Catholic hierarchy (including the “is the Pope Catholic” Jesuit in Rome.)
I no longer contribute to any bishops’ appeal. But I continue to donate to my local parish with the check memo “To be used only for the maintenance o the parish.”
The Catholic bishop is an idiot. My apologies to the many great Catholic freepers here. But that man is an imbecile.
It offends his sensibilities that the president of the United States visits the shrine to John Paul the Great? It offends his sensibilities that the president may gain inspiration and strength from visiting a shrine for John Paul II? A man who I assume this bishop admires because he was the pope of his church?
what happened three months ago?
