After Donald Trump claimed most protesters in the US were antifa, Germanys Social Democrats rushed to declare solidarity with the movement. But which movement? And why did other politicians object?
Quite a few people, not least the President of the United States, seem a little confused as to precisely what antifa is. Unlike many of the gaps in Donald Trumps knowledge, there are some reasonable historical justifications for this particular confusion.
In Germany, politicians and the public have been wrestling with the term for around a century now without coming any closer to an uncontested definition.
What the word means is simple enough in German. Antifa is short for antifaschistisch, or anti-fascist. In the most literal sense, one might hope this label could apply to almost all modern German people and politicians. But does antifa refer to all those opposed to fascism, or does it refer only to black-clad anarchists and leftists staring down German police in the streets? The last large-scale German confrontation involving antifa protesters was in Hamburg at the 2017 G20 summit [ ]
Donald Trumps bids to reclassify the US far newer and equally disparate antifa groups as terrorists have prompted political debate in Germany before, but not to quite the extent seen this week.
Leading Social Democrat Saskia Esken set the ball rolling, responding to the threat from Trump by describing herself in a short tweet as: 58 and Antifa. Obviously. One of the SPDs accounts responded to Esken with a nod to the partys age, writing: 157 and Antifa. Obviously.
While several others in the SPD followed this online template, politicians of other stripes criticized Esken sharply.

The Jesse Jackson quote comes to mind: “If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck”
Antifa acts like NAZI stormtroopers, they have a NAZI ideology they are NAZI’s masquerading as communists.
Buncha Commies.
Where did K. Marx come from?
Brexit indeed.
They’re all revolutionary socialists anyhow; they all behave in the same murderous manner.
When I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck. From what I can gather, it was James Whitcomb Riley who first wrote this aphorism.
Antifa are violent communists determined to overthrow the government of this nation.
Why does every bad idea come from Germany?
ANTIFA is a fascist organization pretending to fight fascist. This is a very clever and confusing deception.
Theyre all revolutionary socialists anyhow; they all behave in the same murderous manner.

Yes!
Historically ANTIFA was a Communist organization fighting Fascist organizations.
What exactly the modern organization is? Who knows?
But one socialist group hating and trying to kill the other would be fine with me, but ANTIFA is trying to kill anyone who does not agree with them in even the most minute detail.
Trump has little choice other than to root out ANTIFA and eliminate them from our shores.
If this Social Democrat Saskia Esken wants to call herself ANTIFA, she should be put on the NO TRAVEL list by the State Department.
I’m not confused about what Antifa is. In 1932, it was an organization started by Communists in Germany, and supported by the U.S.S.R. They were anti-Capitalist, and anti-authority, and used violence as a means to bring about change. They were the rivals of Hitler’s brownshirts, who also hated Capitalism, and also used violence to enforce security. Today’s Antifa is still anti-Capitalism, still Communist, and still uses violence to push their ideals, and force change. The difference is that now they’re not supported by Russia, they’re supposed by George Soros, who worked as a teen for the Nazis, and is himself a Fascist, so it’s rather remarkable that a group who is supposed to be anti-Fascist, actually work for one.
There’s a reason that country is called Doucheland.
Their definition of fascist is anyone who disagrees with them.
From what I’ve read, during the Weimar republic, communist had 10% -15% positions in government.
When Hitler came into power, he began to execute up to 80,000 members and send over 150,000 to concentration camps. This lead to the formation of anti-fa as a communist terrorist group.
Over the years, it’s popped up in different parts of Europe.

Because the Germans though among the very brightest people in the world, and generally quite nice individually are about the stupidest people on earth and are an utter disaster collectively.
They are astonishingly naive and ignorant about many things yet theyre just convinced they know it all - and refuse to listen to anything that runs contrary to what they want to believe....ie what their media and elites tell them. Though filled with self loathing, they still manage to be quite arrogant at the same time and they still have the urge to try to boss everybody else around.
I believe it was Hitler or Mussolini who in their last days stated that Fascism would one day come back under the guise of anti-fascism. I read that somewhere along the way but cannot find the exact quote.
Fascism is coming in the United States most probably, but it will not come under that name.Other variations on that, although claiming that fascism would be disguised as Americanism, date from the same decade.
Not only that, it begs the question as to where Hegel came from. Marx was one of his devotees, although he took the “materialistic” approach in order to find a way to justify his atheism.
