HOUSTON, Texas -- The chief of Houston police had some direct words for President Donald Trump who threatened to deploy the U.S. military to American cities if governors don't toughen up and quell violent protests.
It's his latest warning amid violent protests after George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody.
"You've got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you'll never see this stuff again," said Trump. "We're doing it in Washington, D.C. We're going to do something that people haven't seen before."
During an interview with CNN Monday night, Chief Art Acevedo responded to those statements.
"Let me just say this to the President of the United States on behalf of the police chiefs in this country, please, if you don't have something constructive to say, keep your mouth shut," Acevedo said. "Because you're putting men and women in their early 20s at risk. Its not about dominating, it's about winning hearts and minds."
"We don't want people to confuse kindness with weakness, but we don't want ignorance to ruin what we have here in Houston," Acevedo continued. "It's time to be presidential, not like you're on The Apprentice. This is not Hollywood. This is real life, and real lives are at risk."
You can watch Acevedo's full interview with CNN in the video above.
Chief Acevedo could have just said that he does not agree with President...Then he could have given his reasons...I would not have been annoyed with Chief...
But, the Chief decided to sound like some liberal Democratic politician...
"On behalf of the police chiefs in this country"...What? You are not speaking just for yourself? Chief Acevedo, did you speak to all the police chiefs in this country? United States is a big country...
Chief, I am sure that President knows that real lives are at risk...
Chief Acevedo, would you ever tell Mayor to keep his mouth shut? How about telling a City Council member to keep his mouth shut? Probably not...I am sure that he could be fired for any reason at any time... In the old days, LAPD Chief Daryl Gates had a civil service protection...That meant he could not be fired without "a good cause"... I don't think any police chief has that kind of civil service protection right now...
Isn't a chief of police supposed to be "nonpartisan"? If the Houston Mayor made these comments, I would not be so annoyed...Mayor is supposed to be a liberal Democrat...
"Dominating" is not good? Chief Acevedo believes that...
Arse-vedo is responsible for a police coverup of the murder of 2 people in their hone.
Art can go to hell.
Does this guy realize that it’s open-season out there on cops? They’re getting picked off all over the country. Mind your own business moron, and take care of hour own city. Stop trying to tell the President how to do his job. There’s enough arrogant prigs in Washington, DC that have been trying to do that the past four years, and it hasn’t turned out very well for them.
The little white guys with skateboards are THE ONES STARTING ALL THE SH!T!!!
He is a provocative hate monger. He is picking A demographic and blaming them for EVERYTHING when they are just one component of it AND they are the ones who voted the Democrats INTO office.
Well, Houston is toast!
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there
How many communist-addled hearts and minds have the appeasers of the violent won while the appeasers were busy destroying black families, replacing fathers with government, aborting their children, and brainwashing the survivors?
The police chief of Houston is a long time and very vocal Trump-hater. If you’ve seen any of his interviews or press conferences it’s more than a little obvious he has aspirations of higher office and standing in the Democratic Party. His rhetoric toward the President has always been extremely aggressive and disrespectful.
Same thing with New York State prison Superintendent, and their Deputy Superintendents. Those jobs were all Civil Service. The warden of Auburn Prison got to live in a big, beautiful house for free. He got a housing stipend too. He was the last Civil Service appointed Warden in the State. He was still there when I transferred out in 1983 to go to a prison closer to my home. They turned those top jobs over to whoever could blow the Commissioner in Albany the best, and the whole system went down hill from there. If you wanted to be chosen as an Administrator, it wasn't who you knew...it was who you blew. The new Administrators serve at the pleasure of the Commissioner, and were afraid to speak up and oppose anything for fear they'd lose their position. They turned into State whores, and nobody had any respect for them.
That is constructive, you worthless, affirmative action, waste of a uniform.
And don't you dare tell the President of the United States to shut his mouth. Turn in your badge, scumbag. You are not worthy.
Aaaaaand, you don't speak for the Police Chiefs of the United States.
This is going to be much worse than the rioting of the ‘60s.
Black communities are being systematically gutted by leftists across the nation.
Time for a new chief.
Isn't it presumptuous for him to claim to speak on behalf of all the police chiefs in the country? Leftwing nuts always expose themselves by their conceit.
The loud mouth doesn’t speak for a whole lot of Sheriffs either!
Maybe Soros and the other elite have plans to develop all the burned out areas and shuttle the residents into government housing somewhere else.
“This is going to be much worse than the rioting of the 60s”
You can safely say that right now. little late, but yeah.
>> Acevedo: Let me just say this to the President of the United States on behalf of the police chiefs in this country
LOL, perhaps you should “keep your trap shut”, Acevedo.
ABC is Disney
CNN is ATT
Two malicious operations working hard to undermine the Presidency.
I wouldn’t dismiss the level of destruction during the ‘60s riots. They went on for months. Entire residential blocks burned down while firefights between snipers and police went on and on while the fires burned keeping firefighters and police out.
