Gun sales surged in May as shops reported an uptick in interest and demand amid national protests after the Memorial Day killing of George Floyd and as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc and stoke fear across the country.
Almost, you couldnt even keep up with it. Thats how crazy it was, said Joe Hawk, owner of Guns & Roses in New Jersey. After Memorial Day, it spiked again. It just went crazy again.
Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, a private research firm, estimated that more than 1.7 million guns were sold in May, an 80% jump from May 2019.
Yet again, firearms sales have surged in unprecedented ways, said Jurgen Brauer, the groups chief economist.
The stock prices for several gunmaking companies, including Sturm, Ruger & Co., jumped Monday.
Larry Hyatt, owner of Hyatt Guns in Charlotte, North Carolina, said the gun demand prompted by COVID-19 was already straining suppliers.
Then you have this looting and rioting causing another demand, and its really putting pressure on inventory, Mr. Hyatt said.
Gun sales typically increase during presidential election years and during periods of national unrest, including after mass shootings, but Mr. Hyatt said the confluence of factors is unique.
Theres economic worry, theres crime worry, and then you got the worry of the coronavirus its [a] triple whammy, he said.
More than 3 million checks were run through the FBIs national instant check system last month, which was a record for May and about a 32% increase from May 2019.
The FBI numbers dont match gun sales perfectly but are used as a general approximation to gauge the health of the market.
Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting and other market analysts subtract from their reports permit checks and other data unlikely to be related to gun sales.

Supply won’t keep up with demand in June.
Annnnnnnnnnnndd.................I’m currently looking for my 4th AR. I’ve got a S&W M&P15 PC, Sig 716 and a Ruger. I’m considering either a Colt or Daniel Defense.
Credit one of those gun sales to yours truly. BTW ammo is expensive.
I got some real bargains the past couple of years. The gun manufacturers were really hurting a year ago.
It’s really getting hard out here in California. They have a law that says I have to buy a gun every 30 days. I’m goin’ broke. Nice arsenal though. ;o)
At least the ammo dealers are restocked and ready to ship.
I bought my 2nd Amendment in May. It is locked and loaded.
I went long on Sturm Ruger and Smith & Wesson today. The past few days have been a master class on the necessity of the 2nd amendment. Even those previously ambivalent about guns have seen the light. The classic gun control argument of “you don’t need that, just call the cops” has been blown to smithereens. No one in his or her right mind can believe now that you can depend on the police to protect you, your family or your property.
As our society continues to devolve there are those among us who are determined to not go down without a fight.
There are numerous articles (not in the MSM) that detail people buying weapons recently who never ever thought they would ever do so.
If anyone reading my post here is one of those people buying a weapon and ammo is not enough. You MUST IMO also at the same time join a Legal Foundation with Lawyers dedicated to protecting you if you are ever forced to use the weapon you just bought.
Also, learn how to maintain your weapon. I just this evening cleaned the 12GA autoloaders that my wife and I have within reach at all times in our home. These are my recommendations for home defense. Especially for non-enthusiasts. Pinpoint accuracy is not necessary.
This last point is important not just for the average Jane/Joe. It is an advantage even for the enthusiast if you must act quickly in the middle of the night from a dead sleep.
And, have plenty of ammo at hand. Far better to have more than you need than not enough.
Look at a Remington Saint Edge AR pistol with theb10.3 inch barrel.
I have a Liberal friend who I pretty much cut off the last time we had lunch together in January because he was excited because Chuck Todd told him the stock market was going to crash and we would finally be rid of Trump. I keep wanting to call him and ask him how that’s working out for him, but I have restrained myself.
He called me last week and wanted advice on getting an AR.
I pointed him to a couple of basic Ruger and S&W ARs.
He wound up getting this for a decent price. They’re all gone now.

We were already out of a lot of products before this latest wave started.
Got plenty of Smith & Wesson and Beretta, almost completely out of Glock, Ruger, Sig, FN, SCCY, Bersa, etc.
Ordered 9mm on-line in March, scheduled delivery was today.....now, late July.
Did you ask him who he was going to vote for before giving advice?
I might not want to help arm a Biden supporter.
Had my cities first ‘ever’ protest of this nature Sunday......time for me to find a range and make a purchase.
What’s a small gun for a woman good to choose?
There has never been a day when BLOAT was a poor recommendation.
Go to an indoor range that let's you rent them to try it out first.
Once you've made your purchase it is imperative that you get as much training as you can afford and plenty of practice in between training sessions.
