Couldn’t the mayor have him fired or stuck in career limbo? I’d expect that cops don’t have that power. And ME jobs presumably don’t grow on trees.

Good question. If I’m not mistaken, coroners are elected, but MEs are appointed. So now you have made the situation even more complicated!
