> Both are lying. The city ME is lying to give prosecutors a criminal case where none existed. The freelance ME is trying to secure a big tort claims payday <
Lying might be too strong a word, Zhang, but I think youre on the right track.
The city ME has to work with the DA. And he passes cops in the hallway. He might even have cops as friends. Medicine is not an exact science. So the city ME will give that cop every break he can.
The freelance ME is already thinking ahead to his next case. And that next case might not come if he doesnt make his clients happy. So he wont give that cop any breaks.

My basic point is that the cops may give the city ME a hard time if he refuses to cover up a legit criminal case against a cop, but it’s the mayor who can fire that ME for not handing the cop’s head to him on a platter, even if there is no case.
Unless I am misreading current reports, it now appears that both MEs agree that this was a homicide, and that the primary cause of death was asphyxia due to the restraint hold being applied.
It looks like justice will proceed in this matter.
