Former CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter delivered a scathing critique of news outlets, saying two out of three leading cable news sources, in particular, "are unrelentingly liberal in their fear and loathing of President Trump."
Sauter, who served as CBS News president on two occasions in the 1980s, asked in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece published on Sunday whether a large segment of the public will "ever put stock in journalism it considers hostile to the countrys best interests."
The highly influential daily newspapers in New York, Washington, Los Angeles and Boston are now decidedly liberal, Sauter wrote.
On the home screen, the three broadcast network divisions still have their liberal tilt. Two of the three leading cable news sources are unrelentingly liberal in their fear and loathing of President Trump," he added, appearing to refer to MSNBC and CNN.
The news media is catching up with the liberalism of the professoriate, the entertainment industry, upscale magazines and the literary world. Recent arrivals are the late-night TV hosts who have broken the boundaries of what was considered acceptable political humor for networks," he continued.
To the journalists, including more than a few Republicans, [the president] is a blatant vulgarian, an incessant prevaricator, and a dangerous leader who should be ousted next January, if not sooner," he later added.
Sauter, also a onetime president of CBS Sports and Fox News, also asked what media coverage will look like if Trump wins a second term.
How will a large segment of the public ever put stock in journalism it considers hostile to the countrys best interests? he asked.

“””Personally, I believe NOTHING that the mainstream media states that is more controversial than the latest weather report.”””
And you can’t always believe the weather report because the media will invariably add some snarky comment that the current weather is the result of global climate change.
They obviously dont care about ratings. Otherwise they would have changed their approach to increase viewership. Advertising revenues are not as transparent as they were 30 years ago due to so few large corporations controlling so many news and entertainment entities. Deals are made to spread advertising across many many channels and web platforms. Obviously the corporate bosses at AT&T (CNN), Disney (ABC and ESPN) and Comcast (NBC, Universal, MSNBC, etc.) , are satisfied with what theyre doing.....and apparently shareholders and advertisers are too.
It's always helpful when someone with inside knowledge confirms what we believe to be true is true.
“””I guess Im not alone in cancelling WSJ after decades of subscribing.”””
I am with you. I subscribed to the WSJ from 1970 to 1997 when the WSJ was run by adults who actually knew something and were good analysts of economics and business.
I also subscribed to Barrons during that time period. I have not read Barrons for years and do not know if they have any credibility these days.
Being able to get up-to-date financial information on the internet was the reason I stopped reading Barrons.
Its business...
Comcast owns MSNBC and NBC they get their growth from movies and theme parks in China. And Chinese censors watch them carefully.
Disney owns ABC they get their growth and profits from China. And China watches their news carefully. ESPN is trying to bring American sports to China.
CBS owns Viacom which sends their movies to China.
CNN is in all business hotels in China. The Chinese sensors tell them what stories they can run.
Bezos owns The Washington Post. Amazon is very dependent on China. Much of what they sell comes directly from China. Amazon is like a direct pipeline from your front door to China.
The New York Times is owned by Carlos Slim. He does not formally own the newspaper. He owns all the bonds. If he were to stop investing in the Times they would go under or cut the staff in half.
Only Fox is based in UK, Australia and the US. They are not perfect at all. But they sold their movie studio so they are not dependent on bad governments. You may not like everything they say on Fox, but they are the only major network who is free to say what they like. They still have advertisers who can keep them in line a bit. But they have already taken a hit with many advertisers who refuse to put their ads on Fox.
The media business is not the only one. Colleges, technology, cars, and stock markets, all are very dependent on China for growth.
The folks who run CNN and MSNBC share one simple common goal:
Teach the unwashed masses to know their place.
People are now on to them and the media no longer have a monopoly on propaganda.

Yes, they hate our country - and they hate our President - but more than that they hate us... traditional Americans.
We need to lie about them the way they lie about us. We need to find our own 'Adam Schiff' and trash their ranks with filth and lies like they do to us... And the thousands of fake hate crimes they cover when the only real victim is us? We need to make up fake hate crimes about liberals then call the press thugs and demand they cover it.
It's time we returned their hatred with our hatred.
Interesting that NPR doesn’t fare all that well for credibility even among democrats.
They want an America in which they are powerful, respected, and tell the 'little people' how to think. The currency in the media, academics, and politics is not just 'currency', it's stature - and they see theirs waning.
Liberal journalist take pride in telling advertisers they have ZERO political say over content.
I can make a case for that.
But that policy has been abused - and badly. It might be time for news organizations to make a little effort to diversify their news rooms. I’m NOT talking about the phony diversity of a gay liberal, a trans liberal, a black liberal, a brown liberal, an old liberal, a young liberal and a liberal with freckles - being diverse.
It’s time for a diversity of ideas... NOT sexual hole of choice and skin pigmentation...
Yep. The media is our enemy. They are the #1 problem facing our nation because they drive the narrative for partisan purposes and they care nothing about truth. For many years they simply parrot the DNC talking points. How many times have you heard dozens of pundits, reporters, and talking heads on multiple networks parrot the same words on the same day?
The only answer is for people to stop consuming the lies and recognize them as liars.
The hysteria they breed is a clear and present danger to the country.
This is soooo ancient news.
Hell, it’s ancient history now.
“Shareholders and advertisers”
Wrong.
As long as they have viewers/readers they will have the other two. And without viewers/readers they have nothing.
They have a considerable audience right now.
As you point out, it’s all China.
So, why do you call it “business”?
It’s not “business” to them.
Liberal + loathing Trump + Agenda = Media
At least here in The Alamo City, the radio, tv & EXPRESS NEWS usually are “close to correct” on the approximate temperature, amount of rainfall, likelihood of flash floods, predicted tornados, etc.
FWIW, it “came a gulley-washer” here last night. - At times, I could hardly see my car due to the HEAVY rain, which was parked less than 100 feet from my front door.
(San Antonio is on the edge of the desert & we usually either get a LOT of rain or none.)
I was relieved that we did NOT get the predicted HAILSTORM yesterday. = My insurance company is REALLY tired of repairing/repainting (or “totaling out”) my cars due to wind, hail & other storm damage.
Yours, TMN78247
