A group of protesters in Kentucky on Sunday hung an effigy of Gov. Andy Beshear (D) outside the state capitol during a rally celebrating the Second Amendment and opposing coronavirus restrictions.
The demonstration was organized by the group Take Back Kentucky and billed on Facebook as an opportunity for individuals to "celebrate freedom and to fight back against the unconstitutional shutdown over the Coronavirus." The event attracted approximately 100 people to the Kentucky State Capitol, The Louisville Courier-Journal reported.
As the rally entered its final stages, organizers reportedly led a crowd to the governor's mansion as part of an attempt to deliver a message asking Beshear to resign. During their walk to the residence, individuals could reportedly be seen carrying signs saying, Abort Beshear from office and "My rights dont end where your fear begins."
The crowd also chanted "Come out Andy and "Resign Andy," though no one came to the door while they were there.
Following the trip to the governor's mansion, the crowd returned to statehouse and an effigy with a picture of Beshear's face attached to it was hung from a tree with the message sic semper tyrannis."
The Courier Journal reported that the effigy was taken off the tree shortly after people captured photographs of it.
The episode prompted outrage from state leaders of both parties.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement on Twitter that the actions were "unacceptable" and that "there is no place for hate in Kentucky.
"This is disgusting and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Kentucky Secretary of State Michael G. Adams (R) said. "The words of John Wilkes Booth have no place in the Party of Lincoln."
"Hanging Governor Beshear in effigy is beyond reprehensible, and yet it is also the logical conclusion of the hateful rhetoric we saw touted on the Capitol grounds earlier this month that was implicitly condoned by elected representatives from the legislatures majority party," Kentucky House Democratic leaders said in a statement. "Doing this in front of our Capitol, just a short walk from where the Governor, First Lady, and their two young children live, is an act that reeks of hate and intimidation and does nothing but undermine our leading work to battle this deadly disease and restore our economy safely."
Kentucky began gradually lifting its coronavirus restrictions and allowing certain businesses to reopen in late April. On Saturday, the state permitted restaurants to begin offering dine-in services with limited capacity.
The KY rat Governor should be removed, but when you quote Booth whatever point you are making gets lost.
I'm sure he also says that about Antifa. McConnell is as much a deep stater as the rest.
If we were really pissed, they would know it.
He’s a Dimbulbcrat.
Why only the effigy? (Just joking, of course.) ;-)
Isn’t it supposed to be: “Hic Sic Semper Tyranus”? That was how Booth said it, which was probably why he broke his ankle.
It appears that McConnell and Biden have something in common - dementia.
Yes I see the point, “They used the infamous Booth quote” will be the story is all I am saying. We are in a battle for public opinion and Optics still matter like it or not. If bullets start flying that’s out the window but for now we need to be smart.
The democrat gubernatorial candidate won by just over 5,000 votes.
That is easily done in one corrupt city like Louisville or
Frankfort. They will always win close elections because
the democrats will steal enough to win by hook or by crook.
Some guy in Michigan did similar with a Barbie-Whitmer look alike and *they called it “racist.” History escapes these people
*MSM, Whitmer, et al
When you elect a Demonicrat, you elect evil and tyranny.
The citizens of Kentucky brought it upon themselves. Granted, I heard the GOP candidate did himself no favors by engaging in some political shenanigans, but this is where the shortsightedness of people comes back to haunt them.
“Sic semper tyrannis” was simply quoted by John Wilkes Booth (allegedly). He wasn’t the author. The phrase is the motto of the State of Virginia. It’s on their flag.
The correct word is hanged, not hung. Protesters hanged an effigy.... The Hill needs a new copy editor.
KY people like those in LA can always be counted upon to back the Democrat running for governor. Otherwise, they are mostly Republican.
Isn’t it amazing that so many professed Christians remain in the Democratic Party?
Oh, boo hoo...what did they expect when millions of lives/businesses are being destroyed?
KY has had only two Republican governors, both defeated for reelection, since Louie B. Nunn left office in 1971.
It’s a good thing the protesters hanged an effigy of a white man.
Can you imagine the furor if they did this to a black governor?
Original quote is from Marcus brutus. Booth was quoting him.
