Mayor Bill de Blasio insists city businesses forced to close because of the coronavirus outbreak are doing just fine and will be able to stay shuttered for months to come despite a new report that found the Big Apples private sector has shed one in four jobs.
Ive talked to lots and lots of business leaders, especially the smallest businesses. Theyre very worried about their futures understandably, but they also are hanging on and they know it can be a matter of months until theyll be back in action, de Blasio said.
A caller from Brooklyn urged Hizzoner to take a more surgical approach to the citys COVID-19 response. Were on the precipice of destroying the whole city basically, Cassius said.
I couldnt disagree more with that core analysis, de Blasio responded.
Rushing back is consistently proven to have the boomerang effect and make things worse and cause bigger shutdowns, de Blasio said.
City Councilman Mark Gjonaj blasted the mayors remarks.
Out of all the things that have come out of his mouth, this is the most outrageous, said the Bronx Democrat, who chairs the councils small business committee.
Hes going to leave City Hall in the worse condition that this city has experienced since World War II and the Great Depression, he said.
That would also explain why he only allocated $49 million in loans and grants, which is a fraction of a fraction of what these small businesses actually need, Gjonaj said.
The National Restaurant Association predicted that 11 percent of New Yorks 25,000 restaurants will permanently close by the end of May. Iconic Big Apple eateries like Coogans Irish pub in Washington Heights and egg cream spot Gem Spa in the East Village have already shut their doors for good.

My first impression when I saw the headline was that it was from the Babylon Bee. After I read the article I still thought Babylon Bee. But I don’t think even they could make this up.

How many paychecks have the DeBlasios missed?
BOY that freaked me out the first time I saw it.
One comment said “what if he said “wow they have one on this planet too. cool!!” lol
But how did he know it wasn’t an asteroid or some other catastrophic event?
I think the real impact will be felt as workers and business owners who could have retired but continued working are going to be retiring en masse; work conditions and the payoff will make it a smart decision.
Has this imbecile ever had a real job? I’m guessing not.
William Marcy Tweed (Boss) was a better Mayor.
NYC will be a huge HOMELESS CAMP in the near future!! GOOD...it already is a HELLHOLE.
Take away the governor’s pay and see how long he can hold on!

I’d say more like 11% will still be in business by the time the Rats are done with them.
I’m already seeing signs for the hot new franchises “Space Available” and “For Rent” popping up on storefronts around the Chicago area.
We’re gonna need another Charles Bronson real soon....
I read an article about motorcyclists in NYC riding through Manhattan. Said it was great. No cabs, no busses, no pedestrians darting in an out. It was/is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a city boy motorcyclist.
Then it devolved into how sad it made them feel. I suppose I can respect that. Im not a city boy so lonely roads are just lovely for me. I cant imagine riding in NYC. California freeways were bad enough.
Highway 1 up the coast made up for it though.
His wife told him that small businesses are just scams run by Asians and Jews to rip off black people - and he sets policy on that basis. :)
My sister told me that two family owned restaurants in her town folded and won’t be re-opening. This has been a tragedy. I just watched The Coming Convergence and because it was so good have been posting about it. A 2017 release . . .it has more relevance today than three years ago. It’s a free watch on Amazon Video Prime and also available on DVD. There are for sale signs everywhere in our town. . . it’s been that way for well over a year.
One wonders if this latest “progressive” idiocy will wake New Yorkers up to what they are doing to their city, indeed their state, their nation? Probably not
The bigger the business the more resources they MAY have to weather this unconstitutional idiocy, but most small business are goners already. The money runs out about now. Their entire life savings, their credit, their cash, is gone.
Who is going to be hit REALLY hard are the retirees whose pension plans are rooted in commercial real estate. When retirees see their monthly stipends are half or less than they were, they might think twice about how much fun this drama bug is to them.
“What else you got?” Bronson
