NEW YORK - More than 4,300 recovering coronavirus patients were sent to New York’s already vulnerable nursing homes under a controversial state directive that was ultimately scrapped amid criticisms it was accelerating the nation’s deadliest outbreaks, according to a count by The AP.
AP compiled its own tally to find out how many COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals to nursing homes under the March 25 directive after New York’s Health Department declined to release its internal survey conducted two weeks ago. It says it is still verifying data that was incomplete.
Whatever the full number, nursing home administrators, residents’ advocates and relatives say it has added up to a big and indefensible problem for facilities that even Gov. Andrew Cuomo - the main proponent of the policy - called “the optimum feeding ground for this virus.”
“It was the single dumbest decision anyone could make if they wanted to kill people,” Daniel Arbeeny said of the directive, which prompted him to pull his 88-year-old father out of a Brooklyn nursing home where more than 50 people have died. His father later died of COVID-19 at home.
Cuomo, a Democrat, on May 10 reversed the directive, which had been intended to help free up hospital beds for the sickest patients as cases surged. But he continued to defend it this week, saying he didn’t believe it contributed to the more than 5,800 nursing and adult care facility deaths in New York - more than in any other state - and that homes should have spoken up if it was a problem.
“Any nursing home could just say, ‘I can’t handle a COVID person in my facility,’” he said, although the March 25 order didn’t specify how homes could refuse, saying that ”no resident shall be denied re-admission or admission.

We had so many beds available. We had a whole damn ship which NY contaminated and turned into a Covid hospital. Cuomo is a damn liar about the whole of it also.
NJ, CA and MI implemented the same directive. So not just a rando bureaucrat’s move. I would be interested in how this directive itself “spread” and infected multiple states. It is possible proof of motive would be revealed by such info.

Cuomo and the others bought into the numbers stemming from future predictions by scientists. Those predictions failed to materialize.

The smart governors did not let fear guide their decisions....they let the changing conditions guide them.
Another example: Cuomo asked for tens of thousands of ventilators when they did not have tens of thousands of patients. That is leading via panic and believing the gloom and doom of the most negative scientists.
Trump could not give NY those ventilators as other states needed them. So, they allocated ventilators to states as the FACTS dictated, not the forecasts.
Trump's policy ensured not one citizen was denied a ventilator.
Cuomo would have had a nice stockpile while citizens in other states would have gone without ventilators.
This is why public policy should not be based on uncertain forecasts, but the actual FACTS as they are happening.
4,300 hundred and then they infected 43,000 and then they infected 433,000 and so on... an so forth.
Coumo’s 15 minutes of fame are over... His infamy will last for eternity.
Note to AP: He let positive staffers continue to work at their facilities, too, until recently.
Electronic and written communications between these facilities and Albany need to be subpoeaned.
And I’ll bet phone calls that were made were recorded by someone.
If anyone’sees wondering where a good place to start would be, I’d suggest Steuben County. Why was a call to one of the facilities there made without local officials allowed to be present...?

This is utterly nonsensical given all Cuomo said about C19. So it isn’t particularly contagious or dangerous to the sick and frail?
