The lesson is to let the police do their job. That's what they're trained to do. That's what they're paid to do. Next time call them, give them all the information you have, let them do the arrest. Play stupid games like vigilante, win stupid prizes.

It is a difference in mind set. Lots of people do their own plumbing, harvest their own garden, educate their kids, even build their own houses.

The idea that everything should be left up to the "experts" is enervating.

I own a house and along with my father we basically rebuilt the place. We did most of the work but there were still some things we left to professionals because it was safer to let them do it than possibly wind up in over our heads. In retrospect it would have been safer for the McMichaels to have left law enforcement to professionals because they certainly wound up in over their heads with tragic results all around.

Obviously not their best decision, and one that is probably going to wind up costing the department big bucks in the wrongful death lawsuit.
