The weight to having a family business,' Raymond says while guiding me through massive walk-in freezers holding a fraction of their capacity, 'is you don't want to be the one who fails.'
The story below is the second in a series on Americas small businesses, their struggles under the shutdowns, and what theyre doing to survive. Over two weeks, The Federalist is traveling the country to tell more stories like this one (and a few about the outlaws).
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH Raymond and Jill Zaelit massively expanded their facilities in 2017. Their business is meat, or more specifically, carving, crafting and delivering customized cuts, ages, breeds whatever you need to gourmet chefs.
The couple spent shy of $3 million on the state-of-the-art expansion: A more expansive processing facility to serve the rapidly growing fine dining scene in Salt Lake and Park City, increased storage, more freezers, and a roomier office space and lobby to make sales and host clients. Its a large capital investment one theyre proud of.
If you told me this pandemic would hit, hit like this, Raymond, 58, says, thinking back on their expansion, I wouldnt have believed you.
Theyre the third generation to helm Majestic Meats Co., founded by Jills grandfather in 1950. The couple met on a blind date, and Raymond helped his father-in-law with sales when he had time to spare from his career.
In 2004, when Jills parents were ready to retire, they bought the place and 13 years later, oversaw the first move in its 67 years. The weight to having a family business, Raymond says as he guides me through massive walk-in freezers holding a fraction of their peacetime capacity, is you dont want to be the one who fails.

It only counts if he moved out at some point.
The country is worried about health issues.
The government wastes no time and rushes in to endanger our food supply chain.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Note: government policies have also resulted in layoffs at hospitals and potential bankruptcies in the healthcare industry. Because, you know, we’re trying to save lives.
Someone needs to lay off of the meat and potatoes...or something. Hey Pelosi, call that guy.
Hey, you can’t save everybody....
We received an estimate back in February to concrete a new driveway, sidewalks, patio etc.
Right after we got the estimate the virus and lockdown started to hit and we held off doing anything.
Yesterday the concrete guy stopped by and said he would take off $5k if he could start the job next week. He is disparate. Said all his jobs he had lined up have all cancelled.
This guy is considered one of the best in our area.
Things better turn around quick or Trump had better start being worried about reelection
Son should have unionized, organized a strike and drove his parents out of business....
Not all businesses are poor. They may be short term cash poor but a lot of them have accursed huge personal wealth. I know several like that and when push comes to shove they will sheepishly admit it.
Someone needs to lay off of the meat and potatoes...
Or at least the potatoes.
Same thing happened to my father. His supervisor told him and another man that he had to let two men go and they were the only single men. Two interesting facts, his supervisor was his father and my dad had not told his dad that he and his girlfriend were running off to get married that night.
I asked dad if he told his dad that he was getting married. Dad said that he didn’t because he didn’t want to make things rough on his dad. He also said he figured he’d find another job soon enough. He was working the next week.
Nancy was my role model for making that comment. Of course, such comments MUST be directed and can not be directed at liberal, leftist murdering despots because they'll have your tongue cut out.
They likely laid him off so he could get $600 per week unemployment benefits til business picks up. A smart move.
Yes, adults understand you always weigh health risks with economic factors. Other wise we should shut down leisure travel permanently or stop driving cars. I’m far more worried about the local road to our local market. It has a 25 mile speed limit but I am sure many go twice as fast. So much I will not let any of my children bike to the market by themselves.
You would think Democrats would then demand more troops at the Mexican border.
What’s your point? The business and its assets should be considered separate from personal assets. Do you expect entrepreneurs to never make money?
I don't think tax payers should bail our millionaire entrepreneurs.
