Childhood vaccine rates plummet amid coronavirus pandemic, risking new health crisis

Childhood vaccine rates for preventable diseases like measles and whooping cough have fallen during the COVID-19 pandemic, raising the possibility of an additional health crisis.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Wednesday said the number of vaccine doses administered from March 23 to May 9 fell 63 percent compared with the same period last year.

In children older than 2 years, it fell 91 percent, de Blasio said.

"The reasons are obvious. Doctors offices have been closed, families are staying home, it makes sense that even parents, grandparents, guardians, others, might not have known where to turn or might have been hesitant to go out," de Blasio said during his daily briefing with reporters.

An unvaccinated child is at greater risk of contracting a disease like measles, that could then put the child at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19, he said.

"The bottom line to all parents, family members out there, get your child vaccinated," de Blasio said, adding that the city is in a much better situation with regards to the coronavirus than it was in March.

"This is essential work. Getting your child vaccinated is a reason to leave your home, and whatever it takes to get your child to that vaccination is worth it," he said.

If checkups have been cancelled where kids get shots and clinics that give vaccines are closed, how do children get the vaccinations?

I have had two annual and a six month test/check-in/check up cancelled. I am reasonably healthy, but still...

If anyone is worried about too few folks getting vaccinated we should be worried about the hoards coming over the border illegally from countries with diseases we eradicated decades ago and bypassing the health checks and vaccinations.

But tell that to the leaders of sunshine state NY.

At this rate we’re all going to die at some point.

Unintended consequence.

America has always sort of sucked when it came to preventative care, but now with this corona virus crap all of these services were cut out and or not required (example pubic schools pushing for them).

When this is over everyone will brief it as a success (CDC governors hospitals...), we are good at pretending failure is success. But this corona virus ordeal really is a quagmire (I hate that word because of who used it in the past - but it’s appropriate).

These little dictators succeeded in scaring the crap out of people, so they aren’t going to doctors or emergency rooms Conditions are going undiagnosed and untreated. These so called public health experts aren’t considering the consequences to public health. Only their damn COVID statistics.

Kids will probably be healthier with a couple months delay in any vaccines they receive. They get too many all too soon now as it is.

Yes, but as Woopie Goldberg asked, 'how many deaths are acceptable?' - because apparently we could have zero deaths if we really, really tried.

Even if NO deaths are acceptable, we’re ALL gonna die.

Even Stoopie.

“These so called public health experts aren’t considering the consequences to public health. Only their damn COVID statistics.”

That does seem to be the case. I have seen very little on the health consequences of the shut down. Lots on economic but not detriment to health as opposed to gains against COVID. A few reports on drug overdose and suicide numbers but not much else.
