During this coronavirus pandemic, access to accurate and trustworthy information in your community is as critical to life under quarantine and as sought after as hand sanitizer and face masks.
Your local newspaper provides news and information unique to your community. Where are the testing sites and whos eligible, which businesses are open, what is the online unemployment benefit application process, and much more. But your access to local news and information is gravely threatened by the economic carnage COVID-19 has wrought.
While local newspapers continue to field reporters and bring news and advice from public health authorities in print and online at considerable cost their revenues have all but disappeared as the businesses that were their most important advertisers were shuttered. Thats why Americas Newspapers and other organizations representing news providers are asking Congress to take urgent action to ensure you dont lose your vital sources of timely, trustworthy information.
First, were asking that Congress expand the Payroll Protection Program to ensure it covers all local newspapers and news broadcasters. While some of these outlets may be owned by large organizations, they must survive on their own. Its only fair that they should be included in any expansion of the program.
These loans will keep the newspaper employees your neighbors on their payrolls and help get the news to you in print as well as online. We appreciate the bipartisan letter of April 19 from U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., John Kennedy, R-La., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and John Boozman, R-Ark., that requested waiving the Small Business Administrations affiliation rule to allow local media outlets to access funding, pointing to the critical role these outlets play in keeping communities healthy and informed.
Second, we are asking that the Trump administration direct current federal government advertising ...

Why is Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) supporting a bailout for newspapers?
And when they get their $timulu$ how soon will they lower their paywalls and “we’ve noticed you’re blocking ads” walls?

Maybe he has a relative who works for a newspaper. Theres no advertising. So they are laying off all the reporters. However they were doing that before and theyre owned by the huge corporations like Gannet and who wants to support them?
Tell him no. Its sick that the Kennedy center got money. Why??
How about no? The lying press can finance its lies on its own.
Theres no advertising. So they are laying off all the reporters.

They can LEARN TO CODE.
Because you can't possibly find any of this information online...
Oh, that's right - you can't be trusted to put the right 'spin' on things if you think for yourself.
Buggy-whip manufacturers must also be given Federal Taxpayer money during this crisis, because people aren’t going out for rides in their buggies like they did before Trump sent the virus to plague us.
Methinks whoever wrote this missed the irony.
This so called crisis of print and other media was created on a false premise. If these idiots cared so much about surviving, why did they not report the truth before this instead of leftist agendas? Now they want a bail out band aid to continue their perfidy. Go fly a kite clowns.
Yeah, I might even agree with this if the MEDIA reported the news instead of promoting Democrat and Left-wing causes.
Buggy whip manufacturers hardest hit.
Our local paper is actually begging for donations. As you say, there is little advertising, the sports section is a reprise of local high school sports from months ago, and only a few actual local stories. They have cut back from 6 actual papers per week to three. Subscription rate is still the same.
Local has been destroyed by the national/international media.
The ones with the big pockets.
Would help to give locals more 1st Amend protections, and the international media less.
I get more truth from the Babylon Bee than the presstitutes
Uh, no. Why should I have to fund propaganda for leftist policy and for candidates who will work against my freedom?
After 25 years in the newspaper business, I had to take early retirement in 2009 to look after my mother in her last years.
So, I have no recent experience of the state of the newspaper industry.
But I can tell you that, during my career, professional standards were definitely higher in the hometown press.
For example, none of the managing editors I worked under would allow unnamed sources except under the most exceptional of circumstances. And usually we’d have our lawyers look over those stories before publication.
Even a lot of the liberal journalists I worked with would complain that us local yokels would get besmirched by the shenanigans of the big-time media.
Still, the industry as a whole has betrayed the American people by not taking a decisive stand against Leftism. A lot of rank-and-file reporters and editors are suffering.
I have some sympathy for them — but not a lot.
I’m only 62 and writing as well as ever, at least I think. It would be a joy and a blessing to be back in the biz, if ever the media culture changed back to something that put facts before narratives.
An old man — well, late middle-aged — can dream can’t he?
All my small town 2 sheet rag prints is regurgitated AP articles and local sports and church event notices
With 2 out of 3 of those having nothing to report, they’re struggling to find enough obituaries and fluff to fill the pages
The monthly report from the local drainage board meeting makes top of the fold, front page
Fake News is not essential !!
