By late March, nearly every country in Europe had closed schools and businesses, restricted travel and ordered citizens to stay home. But one country stood out for its decision to stay open: Sweden.
The countrys moderated response to the coronavirus outbreak has drawn praise from some U.S. politicians, who see Sweden as a possible model for the United States as it begins to reopen.
We need to observe with an open mind what went on in Sweden, where the kids kept going to school, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, a Republican, said at a hearing Tuesday.
But while Sweden has avoided the devastating tolls of outbreaks in Italy, Spain and Britain, it also has seen an extraordinary increase in deaths, mortality data show.
In Stockholm, where the virus spread through migrant communities, more than twice the usual number of people died last month. That increase far surpasses the rise in deaths in U.S. cities like Boston and Chicago, and approaches the increase seen in Paris.

Swedish public health officials have defended their strategy, while acknowledging that the country has failed to protect the elderly. The goal is to limit the spread of the infection without having to lock everything down, they said.
Once you get into a lockdown, its difficult to get out of it, said Swedens state epidemiologist, Anders Tegnell. How do you reopen? When?
Instead of imposing strict lockdowns, public health officials said that Swedes could be relied on to go out less and follow sanitation guidelines. That proved to be true: As a whole, Swedes visited restaurants, retail shops and other recreation spots almost as little as residents of neighboring countries, according to Google mobility figures.

We knew Sweden was going to be pooh poohed! Another concern troll article. Lmm
“In Stockholm, where the virus spread through migrant communities, more than twice the usual number of people died last month. That increase far surpasses the rise in deaths in U.S. cities like Boston and Chicago, and approaches the increase seen in Paris.”
Notice how the New York Times leaves out New York.
“Right now Sweden is running 100 more deaths per million than we are.”
Not New York or Massachusetts or Jersey.
How many Real Swedes got it?
“”””I’m going to take a wild guess and say that it’s the same migrants who don’t assimilate in any way with Swedish culture didn’t go along with the health recommendations regarding the virus. Hence, they died at a much higher rate.””””
Corona virus has a field day on Friday when those of another culture put themselves in the face to rear end position.
Right now, Sweden’s china plague record compared to other advanced countries is middling. Worse than many countries, nowhere near as bad as some others.
But Sweden’s health system never broke under pressure as both Italy’s and Britain’s did, thus avoiding excess mortality due to lack of health resources.
As well, Sweden has avoided the mind-blowing economic damage that many lockdown countries. especially our own, are just beginning to have to grapple with, along with the inevitable deaths that will accrue thereto. As an example, unlike the USA, I bet that the call volume on suicide hotlines didn’t increase 10x there.
But even with the story on case and mortality rates, it’s not over by a long shot. By attempting to forcibly repress the case and mortality rates in lockdown countries through measures that negatively impact our overall health, and with it, our immunity, those of us in lockdown countries will likely see large second and third waves that Sweden will likely avoid, due to more advanced herd immunity, reducing the gap in eventual death rates from this evil visitor from communist china.
As it stands now, Sweden looks to have a worse mortality rate, but a far healthier economy than the USA, but in six months or a year, they may have the last grim laugh on both counts.
The initial results may look bad but if medical experts who oppose lockdowns are correct, in the long run it will work out for them
The 2009 Swine flu was bad and the 2017-18 epidemic was five times worse and yet it has been completely ignored by the media.
So what makes this Covid 19 epidemic so special? Nothing other than the MSM needing and perpetrating bad news in order to garner viewership..................
I challenge anyone here to explain to me how my nephew could have contracted the Covid and suffered for two weeks while his live in fiance never contracted it nor did she test positive last week for the antibodies........
Like I said, eventually you will get it or you won't and all this bull shit about a possible vaccine next year will be irrelevant since the Covid will have died out by then........
We're being lied to and I refuse to wear a mask............
It defeats the article,
Agreed.
.
That’s why all the
Confusion.
No two countries are exactly alike, making comparisons inexact. Luck, travel patterns and personal actions play a role, not just government policy.
And so I fail to see the point made.
Yeah, but Sweden is running at almost 1/2 the total cases per million (vs. the USA). Older population causing their “deaths per million” to be higher?
Sorry detractors but it appears that Sweden has this Chinese virus licked with a minimum of deaths and cases. We should never have shut down.
And New York stayed closed and look at their death rate.
Actually it’s 90, 275 for the US and 365 for Sweden. A better comparison though is between Sweden and New Jersey where I live. NJ is 800 deaths per million more than Sweden and we are close to their population and density. I’d rather have Sweden’s number than where I live. They don’t have Wyoming and the rest of the low death US states to balance them out.
The elites and their willing accomplices in media, have EVERY REASON to lie.
While local stats might be useful I’m beginning to become quite skeptical of national stats. Even here, we’re counting deaths as COVID which aren’t. Elsewhere, I just don’t trust the numbers at all. Looking at cases and deaths per 1M people the numbers are all over the place.
I don’t believe there’s any uniformity on how they’re counted.
Right. I think theyre trying to explain away the Swedish example.

Exactly. Well stated.
A lockdown isn't necessary if the population behaves as if there was, as the Swede's did.
People want to pretend they went on with life as normal but they didn't. They just didn't have the government make official what was already happening on the ground.
"As a whole, Swedes visited restaurants, retail shops and other recreation spots almost as little as residents of neighboring countries..."
