A clinical trial has begun to evaluate whether the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, given together with the antibiotic azithromycin, can prevent hospitalization and death from COVID-19, the National Institutes of Health reports.
The trial will enroll about 2,000 adults across the U.S. and study participants must have confirmed infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. They must also be experiencing fever, cough and/or shortness of breath.
The investigators anticipate that many of those enrolled will be 60 years of age or older or have a comorbidity associated with developing serious complications from COVID-19, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.
“We urgently need a safe and effective treatment for COVID-19. Repurposing existing drugs is an attractive option because these medications have undergone extensive testing, allowing them to move quickly into clinical trials and accelerating their potential approval for COVID-19 treatment,” said NIAID Director Anthony S. FaucI in a statement.
“Although there is anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin may benefit people with COVID-19, we need solid data from a large randomized, controlled clinical trial to determine whether this experimental treatment is safe and can improve clinical outcomes," the infectious disease expert explained.
According to public officials, study participants will be randomly assigned to receive short-term treatment with either hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin or matching placebos. People living with HIV and pregnant and breastfeeding women also are eligible to participate in the study.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, is sponsoring the trial, which is being conducted by the NIAID-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). Teva Pharmaceuticals is donating medications for the study.

Sounds like they are leaving out zinc, which is a necessary medicine in the cocktail. Not surprising, as they want the trial to fail.

Looks like the only worthwhile clinical trial to look at is the one organized by Dr. Vladmiri Zelenko with St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, Long Island, New York, which will try to replicate his own successful patient cases and use his suggested protocol.

Zinc is the main ingredient. The others play supporting roles.
Where is the zinc? From what I have heard, they need zinc. This protocol involves hydroxychloroquine, zinc and a z-pack and should be done early and is not always as effective when taken too late. I am convinced these government organizations don’t really want this to work. Doctors can’t prescribe it on an outpatient basis. Pharmacies can’t fill it. Just watched a doctor on Laura Ingraham’s show tonight. She said it has worked on everybody she has given it to and she has seen some very sick patients.
Patients are coming to her because other doctors will not prescribe it. Now pharmacies are giving her a hard time about filling it, This is disgraceful.

Exactly- We shoudl have had trials, and studies all over the US from day 1 practically- this shoudl not have been delayed 3 months now- We shoudl have way more than enough evidence by now as to whether it works or not- when it works, whether anyone suffered dire symptoms or not- etc- all the important info shoudl be all databased up and ready to pour over and examine by now-
wish someoen would inform all the patients i n the trial that these doctors are playing with their lives by not giving them zinc- most of them likely aren’t aware-

They want to limit the number of variables. Do HCQ + Z pack first. Then do HCQ + Z pack + zinc.
Do we have the luxury of time?
So....put the more realistic construction on it, as I posted above: Prolong the misery and lockdowns until at least November 3.

If zinc is not given to the participants, its absence is intentional sabotage of the study.

My reaction. Trump is an ignorant racist who wants people to drink clorox and it takes the idiot bureaucrats in the face of a pandemic two months to start a study. As the saying goes, these guys could not organize a piss-up [this is not vulgar, it is British slang for a party where people consume alcohol in copious quantities] in a brewery.
