Accused Ahmaud Arbery gunman called cops 12 days before fatal shooting

The Georgia man charged with murdering unarmed black jogger Ahmaud Arbery called cops less than two weeks before the fatal shooting to report a man breaking into a nearby home under construction, according to a report.

Travis McMichael, 34, called 911 on Feb. 11 to report a break-in at a construction site just two houses away from his home in Brunswick, according to audio obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We’ve had a string of burglaries,” McMichael told a dispatcher. “I was leaving the neighborhood and I just caught a guy running into a house being built – two houses down from me. When I turned around, he took off running into the house.”

Have to wait until this plays out, but my impression is that he entered an unsecured, uninhabited building and didn’t commit a crime.

Yeah...and its gonna be hard to call him a thief if nothing was taken. No matter what the McMichaels claim he did.

My guess is he may have been using the property to take a leak during his work outs, and would go inside out of curiosity.

He recognized the thug from the video that was taken of him in the house on the day of the confrontation.

I don't think that's the case. He indicated he saw Ahmaud leaving the house, not that he saw him on a contemporaneous video, access to which was in the hands of a neighbor living miles away whom he didn't know and his son had met once.

Thanks for encapsulating the leftist fantasy telling of this tale. The older man who was hoping to hold him up until the police arrived was a retired police officer who had investigated the young thug for theft, shoplifting and carrying a concealed handgun to school. The guy was put on probation for five years as a result of the investigation.

Though I don't know them there are several people on the sex offenders list in the towns I live in. They're on there because they've committed crimes, in the past. If I take it on myself to detain one of them at gunpoint, making a citizen's arrest, in the absence of a contemporaneous crime, I will have serious legal problems.

I agree. hard to call him a thief is an understatement. In the absence of a crime, I think they'll have a problem convincing a jury it was a justifiable detention. Without which self defense, which it was, is off the table.

And of course there was him sprinting away when he noticed he was being watched. That’s called “cognizance of guilt.”

It is a little hard to cut through the BS on this because of all the slanted coverage. The son received an alert and video on his cell phone from the person who owned the house being built. He shared it with his father, the retired police officer who recognized the burglar from his previous encounters and investigation. This was not just two rednecks chasing down a random black jogger. That is why it took over two months of intense public pressure before the two were arrested.

Indeed, just as you don’t have to ‘batter’ someone to commit ‘battery. Battery is any ‘unwanted touch’.

Burglary is just the way to punish someone who has been caught before they could commit the theft they intended to commit.

While what he did could be ‘criminal trespass’ - if the owner of the property did not complain (and they did not) then Arbery did not commit a crime.

The big problem McMichael has is that this is not their property !

Nor did they have any communication from the home owner. They were not tasked to watch the property. They had no information that Arbery had entered the property.

They made a massive assumption.

In the police report, the dad just said he saw a man running down the road.

To make a citizens arrest, they would have had to have witnessed a crime - They did not.

and if the suspect is fleeing, they would have known of a felony in order to make an arrest.

The police were going to be there within minutes.

The suspect is on foot. They are in vehicles.

They had no business and clearly no training to try to make an arrest.

They will do some serious time.

Doubtful...but if true then there was even less reason to go chasing after Arbrey.

McMichael could have simply told the responding officers the name of the man he saw.

aim a loaded firearm

You are basing this assertion on what?
I didn't see him aiming a shotgun at the jogger before the jogger rushed the man
and assaulted him while trying to take possession of the shotgun.

I'm not asserting a definite conclusion, only that it looked that way to me from the video.

Lol, “authorization” can’t be granted after the fact. They’ve already stated they didn’t know him, so any legal authorization didn’t come from the homeowners.

The owner of the worksite has said nothing was missing, nothing was stolen. That removes 'intent to commit felony or theft therein' from the equation.

Him being present “without authority,” in an area with previous burglaries,

But none had been reported to the Sheriffs Department, not at all in 2020.

Unless he had a good reason why he was there, he lacked “authority,”

Then at worst it might be trespassing, which I believe is a misdemeanor.

Sad to disappoint. The home under const will not be allowed as evidence.
Vigilatee is not and was not a law enforcement officer.Maybe thought he was and that was his 1st mistake
All that will be allowed is a man with a loaded gun initiated a confrontation on a public st.
When the deceased tried to defend himself how ever he felt necessary he was shot to dead while the shooters accompliss was standing by as back up.

Fire up ole sparky.

A lot of contradictory articles. The only thing I've seen from the owner of the house is the article underlying this thread. Regarding the video his lawyer said

Graddy said her client wants to "correct the mistaken impression" that English had shared the video or any other information about what had occurred at the property with the McMichaels before the shooting or at all. English had only briefly met the younger McMichael once in 2019, when he went to the construction site to introduce himself, Graddy said.

English, a beekeeper, said he was working in Douglas, about 90 miles from Brunswick, where he lives with his wife and two children, on Feb. 23, unaware of the tragedy that was unfolding.

English got an alert on his phone that a video had been taken at the construction site, Graddy said. "He worked for another 20 minutes and then washed up," she said.

After he watched the video in the alert, he called a neighbor and learned that Arbery had been killed that day, Graddy said. English gave the video to Glynn County police soon after the shooting, Graddy said.

Assuming that version is true, and I presume there times for notification of the video as well as when he looked at it and when he contacted the police, it's not likely son or father saw the video before chasing Arbery down. The lawyer goes on in the article, nothing stolen, never used the word burglary, installed camera out of concern a trespasser would get hurt, wanted authorities to handle anything related to the house. Clearly he wants nothing to do with this incident. If he did share the video, that would be significant, and there will be evidence of that.

They made a massive assumption.

Yes, when the massive assumption is wrong, that frequently leads to serious errors.

No, it couldn't be granted.

Basically. I’ll add to the unfortunate situation that at this point neither son nor father are likely to be offered a plea.

Pretty much correct....
These two sat around slurping Bush Lite(probably burning a fatty) and waited for someone, they didnt care who, to go into the house under const.
(pre med)
Then with loaded firearms they confronted him. He defended himself and got killed.

They will be offered nothing but a request for their last meal.
And rightfully so.

They give Ga a bad name especially Brunswick which has had it news worthy notoriety in the past

I see, since I have an opinion differing from yours, I am ‘not real’.

Balance your emotions with critical and rational thinking.
Present your case and don’t be offended or insulting if after digesting what evidence is available, someone disagrees with you.

Have a Nice Day
