For decades, the enormous disease-curing potential of human stem cells has been thwarted by the inability to produce sufficient quantities of mature human cells in vivo -- in a living organism.
I think they meant to say "ex vivo" not "in vivo" or maybe "in situ". The problem is that stem cell development and differentiation requires multiple epigenetic controls that are provided by external common enzymes in mammalian cells that are not available in a petri dish.

It was happening way back when he started his circuit tours (80s - 90s). Imagine how much progress they have made now.
