Hawaii is an island thousands of miles from any continent. Not much in the way of natural resources. It absolutely depends on tourism which is exactly the industry that is being hit hardest. Easter Island use to have forests but the natives cut every tree down and society there pretty much collapsed.

When Captain Cook first discovered the Hawaiian islands there was a lot less forest than there is today. Life was hard for many islanders and Hawaii was going down the same path is Easter island with overpopulation and lack of resources
