The world is nowhere close to becoming immune to the coronavirus, and leaders at the World Health Organization Monday expressed outrage at the idea that some people might have to die in pursuit of a far-fetched virus-fighting strategy called herd immunity.
"This idea that, 'well, maybe countries who had lax measures and haven't done anything will all of a sudden magically reach some herd immunity, and so what if we lose a few old people along the way?' This is a really dangerous, dangerous calculation," the WHO's Executive Director of Health Emergencies Mike Ryan said on a call with reporters.
Ryan didn't mention any specific countries by name, but it was hard not to think about the high death rate in Swedish nursing homes as he mentioned that "in some countries, over half of the cases have occurred in longterm care facilities," where people haven't been "properly shielded."
Sweden has remained an outlier with it's relaxed disease-fighting strategy, keeping bars, schools, and gyms open during the pandemic, while also encouraging people to stay home when they're sick, social distance, and wash their hands frequently to avoid spreading the virus.
One of the benefits that health leaders in Sweden have thought they might, perhaps, acquire in this way, is something called "herd immunity."
The term is one that epidemiologists have been using for years to describe how a population that is by and large vaccinated can help protect its most vulnerable individuals (often, babies and immunocompromised people), including those who may not safely be able to get injections themselves, by making sure that most people in a community are immune to a disease. When such herd immunity is present, it's hard for a virus to spread.

Put bluntly, getting people sick can kill.
"Humans are not herds," Ryan said. "I think we need to be really careful when we use terms in this way around natural infections in humans, because it can lead to a very brutal arithmetic which does not put people, and life, and suffering at the center of that equation."
The Who said what?
The WHO is nothing more than one of their propaganda arms.
Old people are not disposable? Quick, tell the governor of New York!
“and so what if we lose a few old people along the way?’”
Well, gee, their people ought to have informed the New York governor about such an attitude, given his (recently reversed) policy about sending COVID patients to nursing homes.
You mean the same Ryan who said :
“When asked whether it is more effective to quarantine in place at home or centrally to contain a virus, Ryan said the only way to contain the virus during a home quarantine would be for officials to start knocking on doors.”
I’m surprised he didn’t correct the terminology to masses and comrade a couple of times.
GMTA.
They said they woke up in SOHO doorway with a policeman in my face, who said they could go home sleep it off if they could get up and walk away...
They are in China and Blue States.
WHO can FOAD.
We cannot lock down until a vaccine is available. We have to go out and get back to work. The mechanism there is a slow rate of infection until herd immunity is achieved.
This is not magical. This is the way disease works. You would think the WHO would know that.
We are not going to be able to save each and every person. Some people are going to die. But either we get back to work, or we all starve next year. We lose a few by the normal operation of this virus, or we lose many, many more from deprivation and hunger.
Globalism vs national sovereignty.
They should have just died before they got old, like they said they would.
China... and don’t forget baby girls.
Exactly my thought.
RE: You mean the same Ryan who said
Did he REALLY say that?
...Old people are not disposable?
Well, I’m >65yo with preconditions, and I am all too aware that my time on this Earth is limited.
But ALL biological constructs are disposed of and recycled, It is the way of things
I’m so confused....
The left and the UN (and I bet WHO, too) have been pushing population control and depopulation to save the Earth for decades. Heard of Agenda 21?
Now, they’re deeply, deeply concerned about old people staying alive.
I’m so confused...
So, where is the shot?
What is this shot you are speaking of? Is there a vaccine available?
You are talking about going with an option that does not exist. When we go back out, the natural process is going to take place. People will get sick and some will die. We should make every effort to protect the vulnerable, but we can not protect everybody all the time.
While we are out working, we will be building herd immunity. This is the way disease works.
Waiting until the vaccine is available is not an option, because the vaccine may not be available soon enough to avoid dire consequences that will kill far more than this disease. Indeed, the vaccine may never be available.
At this point, the vaccine is an option that does not exist.
