I object to enhanced penalties for using a gun in a crime. Mere possession of a firearm should not be penalized. It demonizes firearms, and implies they are evil in themselves.

I blame COVID-19 Wuhan virus. Not the disease itself, but the panic induced in otherwise supposedly responsible authorities, who have shut down the economy and taken bizarre steps to “contain” the spread of the virus, then not lifting these strange and unusual actions as conditions improve.

Using a fire arm to commit a felony is considered a crime in almost all states.
Don’t want a felony gun charge, don’t commit felonies with your gun
It is pretty simple to avoid

Firearms are not evil incarnate - they are merely tools.
But these tools amplify the effective evilness of an evil person using them.
If I get into a verbal altercation with someone over, e.g., a parking space, and if the other party threatens to shoot spitballs at me if I don't accede to his demands, it has a whole different quality than if he threatens to blow my head off with a firearm.

I have a feeling these low-lifes would have eventually wound up killing someone else, over feeling “disrespected”, regardless of COVID restrictions.

The people who planned and enacted the murder are to be blamed for the murder. A virus from China is not responsible for what those evil people did to that security guard. And that is the truth.

This is what happens when wearing of a mask for ten minutes in a store is more intrusive than life in prison for a murder charge.

Another tragedy is that you need a security guard at a dollar store.

No, this law is not about committing a felony with a firearm.
It is about having a firearm in your possession while committing a felony.
Not the same thing.
For example, possession of marijuana, or tax evasion, writing a bad check,or drunk driving can all be felonies.
Merely exercising your Second Amendment rights while doing one of those in Michigan, and it is a mandatory two years in prison, before any other punishment starts.
Many cases in Michigan where the felony charge results in probation, but the possession of a firearm results in two years mandatory prison.

Your example is not the same at all. In your example the firearm was used to threaten you.
Would it be different if the person threatened you with a different weapons, such as a flame thrower or a crossbow?

Correction.
I thought the wife and husband had the same last name. They do not. All three are different, as several other posters noted.
