Almost 20 years ago, after my first book, Bias, came out, I made a lot of speeches, some of them to conservative organizations. The book was about liberal bias in the mainstream media. I had been a journalist at CBS News for 28 years and, so, it was a behind-the-scenes exposé about how the sausage was made, about how bias made its way into the news.
I said that despite what many conservatives think, there was no conspiracy to slant the news in a liberal direction. I said that there were no secret meetings, no secret handshakes and salutes, that anchors such as CBSs Dan Rather never went into a room with top lieutenants, locked the door, lowered the blinds, dimmed the lights and said, OK, how are we going to screw those Republicans today?
It didnt work that way, I said. Instead, bias was the result of groupthink. Put too many like-minded liberals in a newsroom and youre going to get a liberal slant on the news.
Liberal journalists, I said, live in a comfortable liberal bubble and dont even necessarily believe their views are liberal. Instead, they believe they are moderate, mainstream and mainly reasonable views unlike, of course, conservative views which, to them, are none of those things.
But what I wrote and spoke about then mainly about how there was no conspiracy to inject bias into news stories seems no longer to be true today.

And they probably do now actually meet every day and ask how can we screw the Republicans today?
Demonrats and media maggots just carry on as if history didn’t exist and the internet didn’t record it.
TDS is, indeed, real. The question is: is it curable?
I read that article earlier.
GroupThink does not exist simply in the news room, you know. It seems it exists mainly in our ‘prestigious institutions’ (look, I will discount the entertainment industry as prestigious anything, but they are also suffer from GroupThink) and our shadowy gubmint, collectively grouped as The Left.
Excellent column.
The media are one of the leaders of the so called “resistance”. These people only care about themselves. They seem to have decided to “remake” America into something that they feel it should be.
No shit, Sherlock.
“But what I wrote and spoke about then mainly about how there was no conspiracy to inject bias into news stories seems no longer to be true today.”
Wasn’t true then either.

IOW, he was wrong 20 years ago.
Unfortunately, sites like FR help that spread, in the phony guise of knowing what the enemy is thinking, as if we dont already know.
I obviously am really into politics, I was the Editor of my High School Newspaper. But the watershed moment came for me when I was in College in 2007 and I was taking a History Class.
The subject at the moment was American History and the Progressive Era.
We watched an old VHS tape, talking about the Media and how FDR got elected.
One of those old farts spoke about how PROUD he was that the media kept the fact that Roosevelt was in a wheelchair from the American People. He called that their (Him and his fellow reporters) greatest moment.
The media shamelessly ran interference for people they approve of and want to be in power.
Sadly I can't remember the name of that program (it was from the late 70's early 80's) or the Reporter they interview.
I never looked at Journalism the same way again.
His original book “bias” was a thoughtful and compelling effort to explain the “group-think” that had so infected the media. I read it and still have mine around here somewhere.
I remember thinking at the time that it was far worse than what he described and tried to defend in many ways, but he made some good points.
I am happy to see that he finally wrote this column. I think it is far worse today than it was even a decade ago and it is not just the animus towards Trump. The lavish adoration the media gave to Obama was equally disturbing to me so while many view the “bias” starting with Trump it was well established long before.
The corporate media is about the ratings game and money far more than truth and intrepid journalism. People pay for what they want to the demise of truth.
There is no longer much of a check/balance to be found in journalism or if it is found in the wild world of internet/citizen journalism where you have to wade through lots of crazy crap (on both sides) to find pieces of the truth.
There are still some great journalist out there doing fine work though - Strassel, Hemmingway, York, Gregg Re, Solomon, Carter, Herridge, Atkinson, Goodwin, and others remain on my reading list. The art of tough reporting is not completely dead even as it has been taken over by corporate media.
For those interested bookmark JusttheNews.com and Bonginoreport for some good reads every day and of course many of those are posted here on FR.
Good article
As someone else said recently, it’s not getting worse, it’s just getting obvious.
If you were going to build an objective news channel, your first move should be to place it in America. That is a small to medium sized city that is not on the Left Coast, the Acela Corridor and which is not Miami or Chicago. Place it somewhere like Cody, Wyoming or Montgomery, Alabama or SPRINGFIELD, Missouri
I can hear all the Lefty journalists and journalism majors moaning already an saying theyd never live in a place like that. EXACTLY!!! Thats the whole point - to exclude people like you.
It’s not bias, it is Political Corruption. Their job is to be the eyes and ears of the people. They are supposed to hold the powerful to account so that the people can make the correct decisions when its time to elect our leaders.
95% of so called Journalists are self admitted Democrats, Liberals, Progressives or Socialists.
Of the remaining 5%, four out of five are Liars.
Its time for him to do a new book entitled Propaganda.
As always with The Hill, here’s a real howler from the comments section:
“Perhaps it would be easier for liberal leaning news outlets to be less negative in their Trump coverage if he’d stop lying to America several times daily.”
Gee, I did not know that it was that simple to understand the media and their antics as per this person’s comment, lol.
Heres the thing about liberals and liberalism - if you stray from the group think they attack you mercilessly and make you get back onto the plantation
that is the stark difference between liberals and conservatives m
conservatives will allow you to have wrong views and will simply logically argue to try to persuade you back to the correct views
for example , life and we should not take Innocent life
