New Jersey is facing a financial disaster due to loss in revenue and spike in expenses related to the coronavirus outbreak that could be just weeks away, Gov. Phil Murphy said Monday.
Right now, its pouring, Murphy said, shortly after announcing he was ordering all public and private schools closed for the rest of the academic year. We are on the brink of having to make very tough and, quite frankly, very unpalatable decisions."
Murphy has previously warned of historic public worker layoffs without federal assistance.
Murphy rescinded an executive order Monday from last year tasking the state treasurer to achieve a $1.26 billion surplus and said he plans to veto numerous bills to appropriate money to certain causes and programs.
The governor called on Congress to provide financial relief to the Garden State.
A fiscal disaster is not months away these decisions will be on our doorstep in just a few weeks, Murphy said. Congress needs to act, and act now.
At a meeting with President Trump last week, Murphy said the hit to New Jersey by the coronavirus could be $20 billion to $30 billion, and federal aid was needed to make up for the losses.
We dont see it as a bailout," Murphy said at the meeting. "We see this as a partnership doing the right thing in what is the worst health care crisis in the history of our nation. And I want to again thank the president for an extraordinary spirit of partnership across the whole spectrum of our needs.
Trump didnt say whether he would support Murphys request, though he did say, You cant have a better representative than this man.

Lose some weight, get off your ass, cut spending, reduce taxes, and give freedom back to everyone in the state. How hard is that fatso?
“Murphy has previously warned of historic public worker layoffs without federal assistance.”
why is Murphey waiting? just do it, most are unnecessary, they should already be off work all these weeks.
Shoulda kept your state open.
Don’t feel sorry for you Phil.
I feel sorry for the people of New Jersey, though.
Does it I clude pension payments?
No reason for police, firefighters, and teachers to be laid off. They’re mostly paid by local property taxes. I’m sure the state has a lot of fat that can be cut.
The guy would be terrible at poker.
This the same gov who took shots at Trump? Good luck. Adjust your spending. Clown
Just let me sell my place in NJ... closing in weeks... I want out!
Hey, New Jersey....
Well, Bye!
been waiting for this- Hey Jersey, I got yer bailout right here......
Red State America to New Jersey: Drop Dead.
No bailouts for blue states. They shouldn’t be asking taxpayers from responsible states for handouts.
Right. Who isn't for tons of layoffs from states when unemployment is already double digits.
If the states don't get aid you can kiss your economic recovery in the next year goodbye.
People who think Trump will let that happen aren't paying attention.
I think we should just force all states to adjust their budgets or face default.
It’s the right thing to do.
He created the disaster. Now he wants federal funds to bail him out. No dice, governor.
btw, wasn't the Spanish flu the worse health crisis?....
Sounds good unless you want some semblance of an economic recovery in an election year.
notice how when its teachers or other public workers we get buckets of tears but the lonely small businessman, or the private industry dude get NOTHING at all....
