Bill Wadford: Gov. Cooper should accelerate timetable to end lockdown
The Fayetteville Observer ^ | May 3, 2020 | Bill Wadford

We need a more expansive phased reopening beginning on Friday.

Gov. Roy Cooper has repeatedly told us he will use the data to help him decide when to ease his executive orders locking down huge portions of the state, and that is fine. Going back to the beginning of this ordeal, remember those orders were solely designed to “flatten the curve” to insure that hospitals maintained a reserve capacity to treat a predicted spike in Wuhan Virus cases.

That being said: In those early days Gov. Cooper made a hard decision using the best data of the predictive models available at the time. As it turned out, those predictions Gov. Cooper’s decision was based on proved to be wildly overestimated. However, he acted with the information available to him at the time and in the best interest of North Carolinians, and I applaud him for it.

That was then and now the data is quite different. Last Tuesday, TV station WTVD ran this story: “More than half of NC COVID-19 deaths linked to nursing home, residential care facility outbreaks.” When you add in the cases in jails and prison, the number grows larger still. Gov. Cooper, you need to remove the folks in restrictive living environments like prisons, nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities from the data for the overall population. They are NOT representative of the general population and including these cases skews the data making things look worse than they are for the majority of us!

While adjusted case numbers generally begin to flatten, even with our increased testing results, our economic situation is rapidly deteriorating. Hospitals, small mom-and-pop businesses and even the food chain we depend on are all in trouble.

Does anyone really think the Guv cares what people think and want? North Carolina has a bunch of leftist politicians who make life difficult for a lot of good people.

And there is the problem. Governments historically are reluctant to admit they made a bad decision, instead usually doubling down. To admit error would be to admit they're not "in control". They're not, but they can't admit to it.

At least he does not appear to be power hungry unlike other Governors. Let’s hope he ends the shut down on Friday and get us in phase one.

We have 43 deaths per million and that’s including the nursing homes/assisted living centers/prisons. Only 15 states have lower death rates than us. He needs to get off his ass and open this state back up. I went by the Lowes in Brevard yesterday and there wasn’t an empty parking space. Meanwhile, right across the road is the Pisgah National Forest with 801 square miles of fresh clean air that has been locked up for over a month. Trails and roads closed and barricaded. It’s ludicrous.
