Austin police arrest 22 protestors involved in rent strike

AUSTIN, Texas - Police say 22 people are behind bars after a group of over 30 cars drove onto I35 at a speed of 5 miles per hour to demand rent relief. “It's frustrating to see us working so hard for justice and to bring like these things to light, and then to be silenced like this by APD is expected, but still disappointing,” said one protester.

A rent strike organized by Rent Strike ATX brought traffic to a near standstill after multiple cars protested rent on the interstate. “We were fighting no rent while we can't work during this crisis. That was really the plan, was to stop traffic to bring attention to this. We had signs and posters,” said the protester. Officers from the Austin Police Department officers were able to direct the protesters to a parking lot near E. Cesar Chavez Street by the interstate.

Austin Police say 20 people were arrested for obstructing a highway and two people were arrested for criminal trespassing. The cars used in the protest were impounded.

Amazing how police will not arrest Antifa for violent protests and blocking roads, will not arrest Black Lives Matter participants when they block highways, but DO arrest rent protestors. Keep it up fellas, you'll start what a lot of us are waiting for, you just don't think you will. lolol.

So do Landlords get to do a strike to their lenders and local governments?

Do lenders get to do a strike to their shareholders/investors?

When does the fun end?

When does the fun end?

When the protestors learn to attack the people actually responsible for all of this, Democrat leaders and the media. Protestors are apparently low IQ types. My question, which you did NOT answer, is "Why don't the police arrest Antifa types and BLM protestors for blocking roads???" If you can't answer that, then don't bother replying.

Politicians say you’re not allowed to earn a living and you think your landlord is the problem? Do these idiots owe anything on their cars? What’s next a demand to tell the banks tough luck?

Same response, all night long, why haven’t the police arrested Antifa and BLM protestors for the same thing? Protestors need to be re-directed to those calling for lockdown, or if they won’t listen, arrest them and THEN beat them until they get the message. Would that work? I don’t know....

Wow! The state governors impose policies that put millions of Americans out of work and then have their Stasi goons arrest them when they have the nerve to assemble and protest that they cannot pay their bills.

Nonessential people with nonessential jobs must shut up and die quietly. /sarc

Given this is Austin I am surprised the police did this. Well done.

Do the protesters expect landlords to give them a free place to live? They should be asking the government to subsidize the rent of unemployed folk rather that dropping money on everone.

One of the long-term goals of the Left is to destroy private landlords and make the Government responsible for housing.

Never let a crisis go to waste.

We’re way past calling, faxing, tweeting and making noise. When someone has a real PLAN, let us know.

There's a certain level of humor in this. When I lived in Austin, 500 people showed up to protest a plan to put a carousel in Zilker Park. Many Austinites live to protest.

They've always assumed, because they were lefties, that the powers that be would smile and nod. Looks like the Bernie Bros are finding out what happens when they start doing an unapproved protest.

Note to the Bernie Bros: Your protests are only allowed as long as you're protesting the right things. Step off the reservation, and you'll find out what leftists really do when they get in power.

It’s working. Lefties clutching surf boards and skateboards are astounded that their leftist Utopia isn’t working out right. Those same people were screaming for Hillary and state control to make people behave BEFORE President Trump left the totalitarians have center stage.

Leftists live in a cargo cult.

They expect everything to miraculously appear at their whim and be provided to them free forever—as a human right!

They have no clue where the cargo comes from—and they could not care less.

I spent the Midterms calling Republican voters, and I’m not even a Republican. I’ll do it again for DJT, and in addition, I’ll make sure each one of the nearly dozen Trump voters I know will get to the polls on Nov 3rd. Feel free to spread that among your friends. Less noise and more shoe leather is a sure winner.

I get your point, but Texas highway patrol would arrest any of those groups for doing this-not just this one. Local austin PD- I’m not so sure.

BTW, causing a traffic jam on a major interstate in Texas? Great way to lose any sympathy Texans may have given your cause.

If they don’t want to pay rent ...they could always move out. Just a thought.
